Aericsteele Introduction - Page 11
Thanks for the support and prayers; mostly what prompted us to look at autism was my sons apparent lack of social skills, his tendency to get focused on certain things like he was fascinated by windshield wipers and would get fixated on things, he had a great deal of anxiety, doesn't handle change very well at all, that kind of thing. His first therapist had recommended testing for autism although they did say that they weren't sure that he would really fit the criteria but there was no doubt that my son was different and that he was struggling with social interactions and falling way behind in school.
We have been fighting for years now to get something figured out, and I'm not sure why it took so long to get any kind of IQ testing done with him. He went through all kinds of genetic testing and blood work to see if there was anything biological going on but everything kept coming back normal. One doctor thought he might have Prater Willie Syndrome but that came back negative. He went and had developmental testing done in Colorado Springs and they found that he was about two years delayed developmentally.
In order to be diagnosed as having intellectual disability one has to have a composite IQ score below 70 and my son's came back at 68. Interestingly enough though his social score was one of the higher ones (High 70's) and the psychologist explained that he starts off shy and pretty reserved due to his anxiety but once he warms up to someone he responds appropriately to social cues and is able to gesture and make engage facial expressions appropriately.
