Wasting time on message boards

Will those who waste time on message boards in this life have need to repent? Do they cause suffering to our Savior by not using their time more wisely to build up the kingdom of God & bless the lives of others?

I ask this of myself as well as others. I have much cause to repent of many things. One of those things is wasting time online on message boards, chat rooms, playing games, etc. I feel like a hypocrite much of the time, because I know that what I am doing is wrong.

Are you serious?. Unless you're spending long hours in the computer just because you don't want to do anything else than that....but I don't think the problem then should be the message board but an addiction that must be overcome. Now, if the reason for you to be online a lot is for work (like me) then that's your job!.

Well, I think you're going to deep on that. I don't know really what makes you said that but our time should be use wisely of course.

Everybody has things to repent Brother Todd. If you're wasting so much time in messages boards, chatting or playing games then you need to find out first why you're doing it, why instead of spending time with your family you rather to be in the computer...just slow down a lil bit every day in the use of the computer, take off an hour or so every day and remember that you're the one in control, even though these machines (computers) can be really smart. wink.gif

Based on your activity count I don't think you are spending too much time here, so I would have to ask the kind of boards and chats you are on?

For instance I believe I learn more on the LDS Deep Doctrine board than I do in the Entertainment board... it all depends on how you use your time.

I guess if it were to take precedence over things like family responsibility or callings ...

I use the time that I spend at work, when it is slow and I would otherwise be reading a book, to post on the BB's... Also my recreation time mostly involves the computer in some way so it is nothing for me to post while I message friends and family in the evenings...

In the great and terrible day many of us will have much to repent of... after all we will be judged on "every idle word" (Matt 12:36)

If your conscience is bothering you with regards to your internet/computer usage, then my advice would be to follow it, cancel your internet, sell your computer and live each day as your conscience directs... (11th Article of Faith)

If I have need to repent of my computer time, then I will need to repent of my job... and I pray that is not so...

Just my thoughts...

You know this thread reminded me of a user (now banned) who got angry with us because we were online all the time. They were jealous that they could not be... I guess they need to open an internet business and then see if it is all fun and games.

wink.gif It is interesting how the human mind works... either you have to spend lots of time doing something rather than just a little. For instance no one would just eat a small piece of delicious cheesecake when they know they could have seconds or even thirds...

I have no one else to "talk to" about the topics/issues I need to discuss. What better place to discuss my hearts worries and wonders than with other members of my faith who can help me to discover what, if anything, I need to do or seek to discover the peace of mind I seek?

Like others said, if you don't neglect your other wordly, family and spiritual responsibilities, how can it be sinful? The internet, like other modern technology, is a knowledge given to man by God as a source of passing along and teaching the Gospel to as many people as possible in these last days. But, like everything in this mortal world, it can be misused and abused by anyone. We all have our free agency.

The internet has many uses and there's no doubt that entertainment is one of it's more common ones. At least for me, this forum and games are something I use as a sort of diversion, even though discussing the gospel on the forum can be educational and spiritually beneficial, as long as we keep in mind that nothing can replace personal study and personal revelation. Like everything in life, self-control is the key. There are times when I know I've wasted time I shouldn't on the computer but, in my opinion, that's one of the great challenges of life, learning how to use our time most wisely.
