My name is Ravindranath, quite a big name, so I normally introduce myself as Ravi (the whole name only ever used when the teachers and disciplinarians at secondary school need to have a word or two with me)
I am an engineer by training, working in the " plantation economy" (Lloyd Best) of Trinidad and Tobago. I live with my wife and two children in Carapichaima - I have two children from a previous marriage, they normally come over on weekends.
In "Our Space" I struggle to find heroes, more what Lloyd Best will call a "responsible elite". I do find much inspiration and hope in the work of Lloyd Best and VS Naipaul - yes the "brutally honest Naipaul". Before we can have the hope that we can claim this space as our own we must have a grasp of our history - how do we all fit into this melting pot (calalloo - Caribbean dish). Best and Naipaul have in my opinion consumed themselves to provide us with a real grasp of our history. For example it took Naipaul efforts in poring over documents in the London Museum to find how for he walked on the Chauhanes Amerindian land while he lived in Chaguanas. This is important to me as well, because I too had no real grasp of the history of the town I was schooled in, and played in for many years. In fact we did a history project on Chaguanas at school and no one mentioned this important fact that Naipaul had unearthed for us. I was discover this in the writings of Naipaul searching for answers about the confusion that surrounds us. I already an engineer fit for the plantation economy, but had no real grasp of my history. This society considers someone with a university degree educated - but I knew very little about my history after all the "education" (rote and regurgitation) to tertiary level. Best places us at the centre of our universe, Naipaul wrote " Finding the centre"
For me, In the arts The Shadow and Bob Marley stand out as our creative animals of our own substance. The West Indies cricket team of the mid seventies to late eighties did show that we can be a centre of excellence, no pun intended to Jack Warner's Centre of Excellence. Jack Warner is proof that this is the picaroon society - where one survives and thrives by using your wits.
