Also, does home schooling wreck your childhood and affect your ability to make friends?

I don't think it necessarily wrecks somebody's childhood. That sounds kind of harsh. A lot of it comes down to how adament the parents are in getting their children involved. When I was in high school, we had two home schooled students who would come for band class and participate. Most school systems, at least around here, will let, and even encourage, homeschooled students to be involved.

Like the kid I was telling you about who doesn't know how to relate to youth on his own age...The only real interaction he has with kids other than his siblings are at church. Well, for a long while, they were four out of six children, and the other two are in 1st and 2nd grade. His parents weren't getting him involved in activities with kids his own age.

I think that's the key factor of why he cannot relate to children of his own age. In my opinion, it is not because he is being homeschooled but because the parents are not involving him in activities besides Church. My experience with homeschooling is totally different to what Babyblues was sharing. All the kids I met in the past who were homeschooled, had lots of characteristics that I did not find in a child who went to school such as: advanced general knowledge (not only Math and English but History, Arts, Science, and other topics) and they were more advanced in all the subjects compared to the kids who attend regular school.
I am teaching in a school right now where I have a child who has been homeschooled and now attending school, he is doing BEYOND great. He is smart, well educated and knows all the stuff for his grade which is making the Principal to wonder if he should move him up to grade because the kid is so good.

I am all for homeschooling, right now I am homeschooling my son because he has special needs but if I could do it, I would homeschool all my children. I think is wonderful, allowing you as a parent, to watch carefully the education of your child and teaching him/her things that goes beyond a curriculum, making your child more open minded and more knowledgable in a lot of different fields.

A lot of it probably has to do with cultural differences as well. People in America are lazy. We are the laziest country out there, I am sure. I think it's wonderful that homeschooling is so great there. I wish it were that good here. And like I said, I've encountered two types of people...the ones who are way advanced, like you mentioned, and the ones who are way behind. I have yet to see a happy medium.

*wags finger at LDS* Make sure your son has plenty of interaction with kids his own age. Heh heh...

I never said it was great. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of legal issues involved because the system does not encourage homeschooling in here, yet the education system does not have enough resources for children with special needs such in the case of your country. Besides the kid I mentioned from my school, I never met a homeschooled kid here in Trinidad. I was talking about my experience with some kids in Argentina and in the US.

Homeschooling in Sweden under fire

Sweden Far left politicians are advocating for stricter laws to allow government the ability to more easily 'intervene' when children are "kept away from school by their parents - often for religious or ideological reasons," according to Swedish newspaper reports. This type of Eurocentrism has a pattern of seeping into American culture - will we see similar assaults on those who choose to homeschool? Ref. Source 8

Homeschooled kids sleep more than others, study shows

Teens who are homeschooled benefit from healthier sleep habits than those who go to most private and public schools, a new study has concluded, the first of its kind. The findings provide additional evidence of teens' altered biological clocks and support an argument for starting traditional high school later in the morning. Ref. Source 8d.
