
At 5 p.m., Sandy had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and was moving west-northwest at 28 mph, the National Hurricane Center reports. The storm is centered about 30 miles east-southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, and 40 miles south of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Tropical-storm-force winds are already being felt from North Carolina to New England.
More than 765,000 power outages have already been reported - most of them in New Jersey and New York.

Some Toronto residents who were left without power after heavy winds took out power lines overnight may have to wait until Thursday before electricity is restored, according to Toronto Hydro.

Superstorm Sandy weakened overnight as the massive system moved inland, the National Weather Service said in its 5 a.m. ET advisory. Winds dropped to 65 mph, but it was still packing the punch of a tropical storm.
By early Tuesday, nearly 6.5 million customers were without power across 13 states and the District of Columbia, according to the latest CNN estimate.
The storm is dumping heavy snow in the Appalachians, up to 3-4 inches an hour in parts of West Virginia.
