At 5 p.m., Sandy had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and was moving west-northwest at 28 mph, the National Hurricane Center reports. The storm is centered about 30 miles east-southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, and 40 miles south of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Tropical-storm-force winds are already being felt from North Carolina to New England.

More than 765,000 power outages have already been reported - most of them in New Jersey and New York.

It's not just the rain and wind that's causing problems. Forecasters expect there could be up to 2 feet of snow tied to this "Superstorm." It is already snowing in parts of the Appalachian Mountains. West Virginia has already declared a state of emergency, while North Carolina Gov. Beverly Purdue h as declared a state of emergency for 24 counties in the western part of her state due to snow. Ref. Storm in my neighborhood Carroll County was not as bad as expected. Fallen trees in some areas and a little flooding. The winds we really hash about 800pm. My house is surrounded by trees and it got a little scary.

Power may not return for some in Toronto until Thursday

Some Toronto residents who were left without power after heavy winds took out power lines overnight may have to wait until Thursday before electricity is restored, according to Toronto Hydro.

Superstorm Sandy weakened overnight as the massive system moved inland, the National Weather Service said in its 5 a.m. ET advisory. Winds dropped to 65 mph, but it was still packing the punch of a tropical storm.

By early Tuesday, nearly 6.5 million customers were without power across 13 states and the District of Columbia, according to the latest CNN estimate.

The storm is dumping heavy snow in the Appalachians, up to 3-4 inches an hour in parts of West Virginia.

At least 13 people are dead in the U.S. From Sandy. Also, one person was killed in Canada. Previously, the storm claimed 67 lives in the Caribbean, including 51 in Haiti. Ref. CNN

"'The level of devastation at the Jersey Shore is unthinkable," says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Hundreds of people had been rescued Tuesday morning, and "We'll have to rescue hundreds more," he said after surveying damage left by Sandy.



Mayor Michael Bloomberg says at least 10 dead in New York City during Hurricane Sandy. New York City schools will be closed on Wednesday, he said. The district serves 1.1 million students in 1,700 schools in New York City. Ref. CNN
