A terrible thing to have happen but what I don't understand is why the son didn't recognize the father instead of trying to attack him?

What a terrible story! Two lives destroyed in an instant....maybe three lives since the reporter says it was the sister of mr Giuliano that alerted him. Many questions remain unanswered as for what the victim was doing and why didn't reveal his identity, but I don't think that anything would change the regret that this father will feel for the rest of his life. Personally, I doubt I would ever be able to forgive myself if it happened to me.
