Actually I fear more the "well dressed" people than the regular criminals. Remember, I was hit hard by what it seemed the highest class.
I can deal with a thief that could rob me out of my money on the street. It's a fact that influences just me and him. But what about those who steal in the millions, ruin the life of hundreds?
Odd as it may seems, most of these "suit" criminals receive the same punishment as a poor guy that steals groceries from WalMart just because he's hungry. Sure, the concept can be argued, but I guess you understood the point. I never saw a CEO serving 15 years at the cool house for stealing 1 billion dollars and ruining the life or 25,000 employees.
Thus, I'm going to present a classic case from Romania: You might have heard of the FNI case. (National Investment Fund, although privately owned). The people in charge of the Fund got away with hundreds of millions of dollars. Just over the night. With the life savings of hundreds of thousands of citizens. After a few years the general manager of the Fund was found in Israel and brought back to the country. She was prosecuted and senteced to 5 years in prison. Same day a court I saw a court ruling where a guy that has stolen a chicken from a neighbors' was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Later the chicken in question was found in the plaintiff's yard. But the defendant remained in prison for another 4 years. Remember, the Fund's administrator kept the money, as they were never found.
Now imagine justice. It's not a singular case. If this is how the cookie crumbles, I'd rather steal a few billion dollars and keep the money.

Of course well-dressed people are the ones to be feared the most
I have several friends who were involved in the Parmalat financial crack a few years back, have been given stocks of the "new Parmalat", and now as american investors are filing lawsuits to seek compensation from the new Parmalat, those friends of mine risk losing money a second time...
International Level: Politics 101 / Political Participation: 0 0%
Got to love the white collar criminals who seem to get away with more than the common street criminal. I know that some cases of criminal acts that are considered "white collar" crimes get some hefty fines that cost them more than they took in the first place. Maybe that trend will continue and people do not lose their life savings because of a crooked employee.
Have in mind that most people that commit crimes are lower than dirt people some of those reach so high that you will never expect a business man to commit a crime nor do you expect him to stoop to a level to get what he wants money, sex and power.
