Oh, now I understand thank you! If I want to do an action that I do not have a specific feat for do I just apply my skills instead? For example if I wanted my character to roll on the ground I would use a d20 and add my dexterity of +4 correct?
Depends. Particular actions require the use of a skill. But most of the skills can be used even if you are not trained in it, you just don't add any modifier to the roll and, often, are limited in the challenge level of what your character can actually try to do. Following your example: for simply rolling on the ground, you don't need to roll. If you do it next to an enemy, you need a Tumble roll. If you want to do it in a narrow place, like a thin stone footbridge overlooking a deep chasm, you need to be well trained in Tumble to hope to survive....
Well, Tumble is not the perfect example because is a Trained Only Skill which means that you need to buy at least a rank in it to be able to use it. But 90% of the skills work as you just said. You should read the single skill descriptions to know what you can and what you can't do in each case: some skills can be freely used by an untrained character (Listen, Search, Spot....), some have limitations (Survival, Ride....), some others can be used only by trained characters (Tumble, Handle Animal...).
Yes and no.
Yes a more dexterous person would be better at tumbling, but they still would need the training of how to do it right.
There is a big difference between say rolling out of the way, and being able to roll out of the way and not put your self in a position where your enemy can just stab you while your backs on the ground.
I hope that makes since to you.
A tumble assumes you will spring back to your feet out of harms way, from what I understand.
While lets say you wanted to make a dexterity check to roll out of the way, you would find your self flat footed and prone allowing for an attack of opportunity on your self, and have to yous your next turn just to stand up allowing for another attack of opportunity then too, if you just where to do so with out the "At least one rank" in tumble.
Thank you Kitten that makes sense, it also makes me think about the next feat I should take if I make it to level 2. So if my character tries to tumble without knowing how to do it then that is an automatic fail, no room for a miracle?
Everyone, I'm finding that the last two posts I made in the game Rp thread show up later then I had actually posted them. Is anyone else experiencing this?
