*chuckle* believe it or not this is indeed my first time. I have wanted to play for years but never had the chance. I am enjoying this. It helps take my mind off of things. Just wait, if we ever fight kobolds my character I going to go rage mode on them. (laugh)
Carmana: Sorry, I posted in a hurry today and I may have made a mistake. You wanted me to roll on Knowledge (Nature) or Knowledge (Dungeoneering)?
StefflaBunny: Now if you want we can talk about why I decided to roll for your Detect Plant spell. I will explain it in detail in this Thread later because I need more time.
Ok. About that famous roll. I find it useful to explain why I took that decision mainly because I was unsure on how to handle the situation and any feedback could help me in the future.
So, the context first. We have an abandoned house with blackberry vines at one of its sides. A goddess uses the house for her porpuses and finds it useful to have those bushes produce something she calls "Moonberries", a fruit that may even not exist since is connected to the forementioned goddess which is supposed to be dead. Mina casts Detect Plants, looking for moonberry bushes. We only have blackberry bushes there but they are actually producing moonberries. The druid doesn't have any specific religious or historical knowledge so she may have heard about moonberries only through her natural knowledge. That's why I rolled, with a high DC since forgotten divinities are not exactly part of the natural studies and is very unlikely that the druid ever heard about the plant.
Now, to the general problem, that I find more interesting than the particular case. How does the spell work? If, for instance, Mina is told that something called "Jaltaperk" (first silly word that came to my mind) is roaming nearby. That means "Dogs" in who know what language but Mina doesn't know it. If she casts Detect Animals looking for "Jaltaperk", will she find the dogs?
What I mean is: does the caster have to know what he/she is looking for or any word or definition will do? I would find it logical if the caster had to produce a mental image of what she wants to find but the rules are, as always, more a sketch than an explanation.
I would think that the caster has to understand what they are looking for, so I think you should have rolled the knowledge nature roll, which was unsuccessful, and said she can't cast the spell since she doesn't understand what moonberries are. Its a tricky spell, strange that you have to specify what you are looking for, not like detect evil at all.
Hay Bruconero if you ever want me to make you some maps I will. Just let me know what you need a day or more ahead of time. Wait till you see the new one for my game, not the one that is up, but the next. I can't wait to post it!
