Carnosus looked at Tomas and shook his head. "I don't feel like dying today Tomas, no offense meant, but, I'm not as trusting of these guys as you are, say a fight does happen, and say we do let them out of the binds, say we win, they could kill us all right after! No thank you my friend."
You move the bodies from the road and prepare yourselves to resume the journey. It doesn't take long to reach the ditch from the point where you found the dead commoners. With the aid of the wooden bridge, you slowly pull the three carts to the other side. A very light rain is starting to fall when you make your way in the direction of the large road that you met the first time you approached the groove, when following the wheel tracks: talking with the workers, you learned that is the fastest way back to the village.
While slowly walking under the thin rain, Captain Tomlin finally keeps his promise and tells you everything he knows about what was going on at Lowmeadow.
A SOLDIER'S STORY
Tomlin and Berghost were born in a rural village in the area of Loya. Looking for a chance to escape from the monotony of a farmer life, they got enlisted in the Army where they served shoulder by shoulder for several years until they were sent to LastKeep as part of a permanent garrison in the northernmost edge of The Neck.
"People have no idea of the conditions in which we were forced to work in LastKeep", explains the Captain in a shabby tone, "The regular supplies coming from the civilized lands were not even enough to sustain half of the men employed there. Food was scarce, the weapons old and in poor conditions, clean water was a commodity. More people died everyday because of infections, malnutrition and epidemics than by the hand of our enemies". Tomlin and Berghost decided to defect: they collected a bunch of loyal men and fled to their native village, planning to hide there for some time.
"When we arrived, they were already looking for us", says Tomlin. The voice of the Captain sounds neutral and detached, like if he was talking about somebody else's adventures, things happened in another life. He tells you about months spent hiding in the woods, living like hunted animals: feeding on fruits and small preys and fearing everyday to end up in front of the martial court.
That's when Laurel appeared. He heard about them in the village and, as he said, found him and the group in the woods almost by chance. He came with an offer: a payed job, not far from there, and the promise of a way out when the assignment would be completed. Enough for the group of deserters that at that point were already losing any hope of a normal life.
They were brought to the groove and ordered to build a camp and prepare for a long stay. Everything was provided for them: food, water, weapons, tools and gold. And help. After few days, other people joined into the camp, taking care of the manual work while the deserters only had to supervise and make themselves ready. They were well aware that something was not exactly clear or "Clean". Berghost underlined that point over and over, expressing his concerns about who their employers were and which kind of duty they were called to accomplish.
Laurel would come every few days, always wearing a dark cloak and with one of those brass badges pinned on his chest. Captain Tomlin doesn't know who is Laurel or who he works for. "I only know is some kind of cult or sect. But I'm sure I will recognize the man if I see him or his friend, the one that lost the badge", he says. "I know I've been careless but I was desperate and I already paid a high price for my mistakes: the life of my dear friend Berghost, may he rest in peace. I'm ready to face judgement and get whatever punishment I deserve".
The rain is heavier now, as the last shimmers of the day are slowly brought away by the shadows. Is already night when you see a light in the distance: a dancing and bouncing light that is slowly approaching you from down the road.

As darkness descends, Ferrin offers to cast Light on his staff and on another object to be carried up at the head of the troupe. A flame would sputter in the rain, but magical light is strong and true.

Anntreen listens carefully to the mans story as the group proceeds onward toward town. She stayed silent while it was being told, and now that it is over she speaks her mind.
"The woes of life on the front line are nothing too pleasant but they have a need. It sounded like the Neck could have used a powerful healer or two. Among our many spells we can cast to heal physical wounds, and remove infections of disease and poison. We can also create pure water out of nothing; filling buckets with a wave of the hand. Sadly I am not very skilled as I have only started my path but when things have been cleared up here perhaps sending word to the chapels of my order that there is a great need there, they will help. After all, the Goddess Eger whom I follow is the Goddess of mercy. The caretaker of the weak, the ill, and the sick. It is her mantle that we, her clerics, bare to offer aid and seek that suffering is removed whenever possible.
The suffering your actions have made upon the town were grave and deep wounds that no magic I know could lift. I can respect your desire to be removed from a life of dysentery and pestilence, however it seems what you have hoped to escape is exactly what you have brought unto others.
You are a good man to face justice for your actions. If there is anything I can say to help you understand that coming with us was the right thing to do, take this to be fact above all else. You have made the plight of the front line known to a group who mean to do good in this world. The information given here will not rest idly by. If nothing else I will make certain of that."
Anntreen's steps are renewed with an energy of hope when she sees the gate keepers light swaying in the distance down the road. As the group moves toward the town in the final bit of walking she makes a suggestion to the group.
"I say we push on past the tavern as we can not afford a room, I suggest we head for the ranch this night even as the hour grows late. I suggest that when we get there we do not take the offerings of the workers under the master to see to us if he has already turned in for the night. It is of my opinion along with the words the old man had given us that there is indeed a spy within his ranks. I suggest the most of us and the men and carts wait just outside the view of the main gate while Tomas and another go in to wake and talk with Goatshearer himself before another action is taken."
Carnosus looked at Anntreen and nodded as he pulled the cart with her. "As I owe you my life Anntreen I should let you know that I am honor bound to stay close to you in case of trouble. So where you go, I go, within reason."
Mina adds into the conversation, "Actually, I think one or two of our group should go to the tavern for a bit of information gathering on anything that has possibly happened there during our journey. Then we could all connect back at or outside Goatshearers property."

Anntreen smiles at the others.
"Mina that sounds like a good thought, perhaps just you can accomplish it. Information gathering is important but may be hard to accomplish this time of day. Be careful, and try to catch up with us when you are done. I would think you would make your way back before we have gained audience within the gates."
Mina looks at Anntreen a little startled. "I didn't mean me, I'm sure someone else could pour more honey than I could to get information."
She thinks for a moment as they continue to walk on, "I guess I could, I have been in that tavern before so the Barkeep and the Barmaid might be looser with their tongues for someone they've seen before. I still think another should come with me, though."
