Donald Trump could say he molests animals and the Republicans would back him every inch of the way. They are forced to follow him down the spiral no matter how far it goes. Unfortunately, Trump is going to continue with the asinine rhetoric for as long as people pretend to believe him. When it's all over, Clinton will be in office again and Trump will get his paycheck. War is big money and the Clintons aren't going to let anyone else have a say. It's neocon Hillary going to war with whoever she wants for as long as she wants and there is absolutely nothing anyone will be able to do about it.

My biggest question in all of this is why did the Republicans sell themselves so short by choosing Trump? Is there a bigger conspiracy to ensure that Clinton wins?

The two parties have been working in tandem for years. The League of Women voters refused to host debates anymore due to the leadership of both parties working together to ensure easy questions during the debates.

This nomination was totally about sending a message to the political class of Washington and reminded that they serve US and not themselves, so those entrenched in the system had little to no chance. That took care of most all that have been in politics for over a decade (Bolton, Bush, Christie, Huckabee, Jindal, Kasich, Pataki, Perry, Romney, Ryan, Santorum and Graham). Rand Paul basically had already shown that he was willing to bend his principles in playing the DC game, so he fell aside. Walker really didn't have an effective strategy and seemed pretty lost. Then it came down to the outsiders or new comers and that ended up being a who was better on TV and at sound bites (Because, that is sadly what we like in a candidate now). In that forum, Trump wins (Cruz, Carson, Rubio and Fiorina don't match up) and is why we are here at this moment. Honestly, if Trump and Cruz could have kept it from getting personal and Cruz come on as a VP or if Cruz won it outright, this wouldn't be nearly as close as it is now.

Romney should have run again, he would have a better chance of success now than he did the last election.

With this climate… I don't think Romney would have stood a chance. He is hated almost as much as Ryan right now and Ryan was recently booed at an speaking event. Your best bet today would have been to be a outsider within politics (Cruz and maybe Paul) or a total outsider. Think about it… the Dems almost nominated a self confirmed socialist. Washington's approval rating hasn't been over 20% in quite a while now.

I wonder what's the general consensus in the hirachy of the GOP that won't support Trump. Do they really rather Hillary become the next president than vote for one of their own?

Gut feel… those in the GOP that you are referring to want their nice life to remain as is for as long as the debt will allow it. I think they all know that the good times are coming to a halt, but they know that Trump will pull the curtain off the situation immediately and will not hesitate to tell us how bad it really is when he gets in.
