The case is not trapped. When you open it you find several rolled up pieces of good quality large sized parchment all blank, a straight edge, a good ink quill, a inkwell with ink in it, a drafting compass, along with other small tools used to make maps.
You have just found a full map makers kit.
In Character: Krusten finds the new item a novelty. She wonders if someone in the other room will have better use for it. Nevertheless she puts around her neck and begins looking at the wooden door with the keyholes.
Out of Character: Do I have to roll to search for traps on every object or when I roll for a room that includes everything?
When Felipe finished with pulling and holding on the belts for Praos to take Rudiger's body out, he notices that he didn't see this man before, he says to him, "hey, I haven't seen you before, you must be one of the survivors here, well welcome to the group, and good job on trying to take out Rudiger's body successfully". After saying that he notices the things that Rudiger is having and he says to the group, "What things can we take from Rudiger?"
Edited: Felipe on 6th Feb, 2013 - 7:07pm
Izumi responds to Felipe, "I'd say we should take what might be useful or necessary, like the food and water, bags, perhaps the laces of the shoes. We should, in honor of him, not take any of the clothing he wears, nor his boots. Everything else is optional."
Izumi asks the group, "So, what do we need?"
After all that has been going, Praos is a bit amazed that the man in front of him has just taken notice of him ." Thank you for the welcome. It was no big deal to help with respecting the corpse of another soul that found his end in this maze ." He pauses for a moment long enough to strap his belt back, and then continues ." If you want to take something from him, I would say we take only the essentials. Whatever food he has, bags, water, luminous globes and stuff like that. And maybe his weapons. They may be useless to us, but we may find them being wielded by the wrong hands ."
He walks towards the edge of the pit, inspecting it for what he hope to be the last time, and takes the book from inside his blouse. He leafs through it as careful as he can, trying not to damage the pages, and turns to the group. " I think you should see what I found down there ."
Out of Character: : I just leaf through the journal, trying to see if I can read it .
Felipe says to the group, "OK, so who will take the food and water? There is some glowing crystals here that can help light up the rooms, we can also take that as well, what about this sword? This sword is similar to the one that I have and it looks pretty new, so who is going to take it?
As Praos begins to thumb through the journal trying to see if he can read it, a look of shock comes over his face as he recognizes the authors name to be a famed member of his order who disappeared without a trace 10 years ago. Without realizing it, he starts to read aloud.
The new book to be found
A high quality thick blue stained leather bound book is found. On its cover it reads in gold embossing "Journal I." in large bold print.
Inside the book on the first page it reads:
"Journal of Thomas Greenwater
Day 1 of this grand undertaking started a little bumpy, the guard I paid a hefty sum to smuggle me into this "Trial" along with my supplies attempted to double cross me demanding more coin then the original agreed upon price after putting me behind bars with my items. After I explained the futility of his betrayal as I had no more coin to my name then the 22,000 gold I had paid him, he finally opened the gate in the wall behind me and I was able to move forward.
The several weeks" worth of supplies and the bag of holding I am beginning to see are going to serve me well down here. After sustaining some light damage on landing I proceeded into a large room. I spent a day deciphering the main room images and taking full advantage of the healing well before moving on. I was able to determine that the water of the well only while containing its healing properties could open the doors and that if all three where open at one time then a well hidden passage way back down the hallways would open.
Taking this hidden path I followed the hallways and passed through many rooms with traps. I have discovered that this labyrinth is less of a maze and more a structure or intersections where most all paths lead forward, some just containing longer and more deadly routes then others. Despite being careful, I managed to hurt myself twice but the healing water I took from the spring replenished my health before it lost its magical properties.
My research that led me down here in the hunt for the old master and his only apprentice was verified in that first large room. The engravings on the wall carried many of the lines I have spent most of my life reading in the temples back home. This has lead me to one and only one conclusion; I am on the right path. Also that somewhere in the endless network of this dungeon, I will find what I have spent my entire life trying to fix.
Notes: Passage of stone
"Prepare for a long walk, even within my strides. Rise or Fall. Sunlight is the only lie here."
"Earthly ore I glow, but never can I meet the sun. Leave the darkness, and you will leave the light."
"Traps there are many of. The mind must have wit. Together there is power."
"Light feet are still felt on her web. Webs cannot reach in the water. Ripples of the tide reveal movement."
"Do not swim in Black water! Drain the void and find a wealth, as blue eyes watch. Beware the blue ice eyes, or die at the hands of what has birthed a god"
"Dwell not in the grove for longer than a night, or grow a part of it within you. Drink not the filth of the waters of the grove. Take noting from the grove"
"The bridge is a lie, be careful your step. Even the fires here I burn in. At the start of the easy path the right answer will be down. Find the stairs leading up and go down. Till the fire is below your feet, then look up."
"In the hall of eyes walk strait, run if you can. When the room is Quite, think loudly. When reflection is all you can see, use reflection to fight it."
"Feast not in the hall of dreams, or sleep forever there. Disturb no dancing man of stone. Shattered stone bears no skin."
"Find here treasure. Honor the gods. Magic is the trick. Take only what you need."
"A Red eye can see the key, Bonds of Blood, and black chains will not brake"
"The dreamer rests with in the mind. Wake the boy but leave the man. The maker of it all will come to you."
"The old fool is the wisest one. Tea is for drinking. Gifts come at a price."
"Shortcuts will prove deadly. Pass this test and the path will be up. Climb the tower of stone."
"You will be free. When the quest starts for real. The path you will pick. The world you can save."
" Together pure harts can pass this test and wake a sleeping god, for only they can save this world!"
The journey will be long.
There is only one way out
The glowing ore must remain in the dungeon
Watch out for Traps
Think before acting
Will need teamwork - "Might be problematic" a small side note is made in the margin
Be careful of spiders. To flee the spiders take to the water
Be careful the monsters in the water.
Do not swim in Black water - "unknown content" another note alongside reads treasure beneath the water
Blue ice eyes - "I suppose the stories of one of the gods having been birthed from an elder dragon might have not just been fables."
Wherever the grove is don't spend to long there, something purely evil corrupts it.
Take noting from the grove - 'self-explanatory. I wonder if the artist of this place was mortal or not?"
The bridge is a lie, be careful your step. Even the fires here I burn in. At the start of the easy path the right answer will be down. Find the stairs leading up and go down. Till the fire is below your feet then look up. - 'this is odd I found no references to a bridge or fire in the tomes I read before coming here. Gathering that they were not within the network of books, it must be a false path."
In the hall of eyes walk straight, run if you can. The only reference I recall to a hall of eyes is a test of speed. Encumbered, overly burdened, or slower moving races might have a disadvantage in this part of the test. I"ll have to remember to drop unnecessary supplies before it if I can.
Admittedly I am looking forward to the room of thoughts if my research serves me well it holds more truth then the sands of time.
When reflection is all you can see, use reflection to fight it. -"hum another one I don't have research on, this too could prove problematic.
The hall of dreams, a trap of temptation, the Dwarven books I read about this test were based on the historical significance of moderation and the argument once overheard between two Gods that greed and gluttony would lead to the undoing of all.
Disturb no dancing man of stone. Shattered stone bears no skin. -"I don't recall anything about dancing stone men but I suspect this refers to the trapped souls suggested to guard the stone halls of one of the deepest points in the dungeon. I will have to confirm this but for now my notes are mere conjecture and speculation. Though it was stated they are near the point at which a sea of gold will weight down the foolish but offer aid to the chosen individuals that can manage to take only items that will aid them on their quest without encumbering them.
A red eye? I could find no passages about anything like this, but shortly before I embarked I heard rumors of a small boy being brought to the city who had survived the Red Mist and whose eye was stained red. Sadly my arrangements to be smuggled in here could not be delayed and the parents turned me away when I requested to see him despite being a scholar of some fame.
Keys have too many references in the books and I cannot determine what 'Bonds of Blood' the passage was speaking of.
Black chains - I believe it refers to the demons born of pure hate near the end of the war. But they could as easily refer to a color or the black feathered Gods son. I recall reading a story where the son of the god Tazzier renounced his father and was bound and chained in the feathers of his father's wrath before being cast in to a pit. But there's no way to verify if this was a legend of historical event.
The dreamer rests - with hope this will mean he is here slumbering only waiting to be woken.
Wake the boy but leave the man, the maker of it all will come to you. - I don't have any idea what this means but it must have something to do with the slumber of the wisest fool. I just know it.
In order to wake him I am thinking of an offering or sacrifice maybe required but I can't determine of what kind or what type. At which point I believe the deadly challenge of the escape will prove even more dire, but at the same time the research suggests once he was woken that the exit would be within sight.
Tower of stone, tower of stone"¦ I can't be clear about this but I would gather this refers to the home of all knowledge, a tower that is foretold to rise from the ground and bring the fall of a great evil but at the same time the prophesies referring to this tower always suggested it be a hidden tower buried in sand, I was confident that the tower of knowledge was somewhere in the deep south.
It took me ages to translate the Gods tongue, but I believe when the time has finally come a group will be chosen from the lost ones thrown into this pit. It makes me wonder if my efforts to wake him will be in vain or if the Gods have guided my hand and research in coming here at this time.
The book goes on with a great many sketches of the images from the first rooms" walls and small notes written in the margins around them. Near the back of the book a well-drawn map outlines the dungeon in part. Some rooms in great detail including notes on how the traps work. Some pages with mere outlines of halls and overviews of the possible paths.
The map seems to cover the entirety of the floors you have already passed down from, including hallways and doors you are unfamiliar with.
The last page of the book:
I have made it as far as the spiders and now I have headed back to gather some light supplies I saw in one of the trap rooms. On my second attempt to pass her webs, I"m going to use fire. It seems very effective against her spiders but I did not have the right components to cast it nearly as much as I needed to. Additionally, my invisibility was useless as her webs revealed my movement before I could do much of anything. I did manage to detect a network of caves that split from her web filled hallways and rooms, and the sound of running water makes me believe they hold an underground river. I am starting to regret not having a bottle of air but the guiding passage has suggested water was the correct path away from the spiders den. I can only hope the factor of survivability was included.
My bag of holding should keep my books safe from water damage, but I worry if I will be able to swim with my backpack and cumbersome items. I"ll have to condense everything down before I attempt to charge past her webs again.
With that, the book ends.
You can't help but wonder if the author was such a prepared man how could he of left a book behind after taking such care and notes in it. Perhaps he dropped it in the pit and had no way of retrieving it or failed to notice its loss?
As Praos reads, his words echo threw the halls and everyone hears them clearly including Krusten in the other room.
Elrik "I will take the stones. I suggest that we take the food and water and split as needed, when the time comes. I would like to take his necklace and hopefully send it to his family when we finish this trial."
