This is an unusual phenomenon among humans. If people a gathered in a room and one person starts to cough, you will find that someone in another part of the room gets the urge to cough and does so. Before long most everyone in the room has had a turn clearing their throat by coughing. The cause of this either mental or physical is up for discussion.
I hadn't really noticed it with coughing, but for sure with *yawning* -- in fact, sometimes just thinking about it (like right now) makes me yawn. I have no idea what triggers this "reflex" or whatever it is. I'll be interested to hear others' responses.

(who yawned twice during this post, but didn't cough...)
Yes, I have witnessed the throat clearing thing, but not as often as the yawning thing. In fact, as I read FarSeer's post I yawned and now I am yawning again.
I remember reading somewhere that just reading about yawning, was in fact, known to cause people to yawn. Don't know why… Yawn, *laugh*.
It must me a psychological thing. While reading this thread I yawned three times and even caused me watery eyes *laugh*
I suppose is the same when you are fine until you see someone eating and you suddenly feel hungry.... It is just psychological *smile*.
I was once taking a math test on a cold winte day, and a few of the students started coughing or sneezing. Within an hour (the test was three hours long), the whole class was sneezing, clearing their throat, coughing, or something of the sort. It was so annoying - you couldn't think strait with all that noise!
