Are Mormons A Cult?

Mormon official challenges 'cult' designation.

"Once labeled as a cult," Otterson continues, "there is not much need to explain all of the baggage that comes with it - the implicit ideas of extremism, mind control, authoritarianism and secrecy that play perfectly into the kind of rigid stereotypes beloved of the ignorant and bigoted. Journalists could and should do better than perpetuate this kind of shallowness when referring to the fourth largest church in the United States. Rather than continuing to parrot it, it's time they pushed back against those who choose to use it." Ref. Source 4

Otterson refers to a relatively new definition of "cult". Technically, according to standard definitions, Mormons are part of the cult of Christianity.

So yes, I enjoy tripping people up by saying how glad I am to be in the same general cult they are.

I agree that journalists should be aware of the various definitions of the word and the context in which they're used and not be caught up in inappropriate uses. But my perception is that there are very few real and actual journalists in the world. Most everyone else with that title is just some sort of rumormonger or yellow journalist.

I don't like how the term "cult" sounds, it makes us look like a Jim Jones sort of religious group. We're not like that and we don't want others to have the wrong impression.

LDS 'cult' claims, Christianity

The Reverend Myke Crowder, pastor of Christian Life Center in Layton, one of the largest evangelical congregations in Utah, took issue with Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of the 10,000-member First Baptist Church of Dallas, for his remarks last week during the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., in which he said that the LDS Church is a non-Christian cult. Is Mormonism A Cult?

The question would be easy if the word "cult" had a serious and well-justified definition. But it doesn't. The term has fallen out of favor with academics, but originally referred to a new religious movement with beliefs unusual for whatever culture it found itself. Ref. Source 4

Are Mormons A Cult?

I find words interesting and some over time have come to mean something totally different or even the opposite. The Bible warns of wicked tongue, it can do so much damage, whether by accident or intended on purpose. Words are hard to call back, as the Scriptures also explains, and once out there, it can hurt and defame and even cause a sensitive insecure person to take ones life, as we see more and more among out youth.

Name calling like the use of Cult, is name calling and a form of abuse. In a marriage or etc relationship, it would be term ABUSE, and could bring separation or even jail time, carried to the extreme.

This time it was used to defame and bring things down. It is used in politics all of the time. I remember a college class on law, and what they can get away with. The professor used the phrase, that one politician might call another, that his opponent was a masticating Sexagenarian. Those who might not know what the words mean, but it sounds bad, and may form negative impressions about them. When it only explains that it is some of a certain age, who chews there food.

I have seen the news media, groups and even the Government use words to bring negative light against a group many times.

When I think of a Cult, it speaks of a small group, normally when I was growing up decades ago, it meant like witchcraft or etc. Not sure how this can apply to Mormons, when we are a main stream church in the US and the World.

I don't hear the word Cult used much any more, what I hear is, we are not Christians, because we don't believe in the Classic Christian doctrine of the rest of the Christian Churches.

I don't remember which minister who put this out, but it came up at our last High Priest Quorum meeting, that was mentioned at a regional event for leaders, by a few General Authorities. This Pastor said, he decided to actually read the Book or Mormon, and encourage other ministers and pastors to do the same. He said of the Book of Mormon and Mormons, if anything, they live and believe in Christ more then the other Christan Churches. The only negative thing I can say about them is, they seem obsessed about Christ.

My thought is, can anyone be too obsessed about trying to follow and be like him, living in a world that pulls most of us far more off our paths then we care to realize.

Are Mormons Cult

Name: Interesting
Country:

Comments: I'm not a Mormon but with all the political commotion about Mitt Romney's religion I decided to poke around. First I looked up online sites, the official ones, and from what I saw Mormonism looks like another Christian based religion. Then I decided to look at unofficial sites and I was shocked. The official sites don't mention anything about the Masonic rites that take place and the controversial history with Brigham Young. So is it a cult, well I am still searching but for now the answer depends on where you get your information.

Joe Public,

Most Christians churches don't understand Mormon's, because they don't really fully understand Hebrew or Israelite, more ancient doctrine and practices; they just know what their ministers tell them.

To keep it short. In the Bible, it says there must be a Restoration of all things in the last days, before the Lord can come again. Things went terribly wrong not long after Christ was crucified, wolves did come into the flock and destroyed many of the truths, and those who taught them. The Roman Empire realized it could not win the fight to contain the Christian Movement, so they injected their own Church. They took the main points of the Christian Movement and Doctrine, mixed in pagan rituals and holidays to make it more popular with everyone, and then set about to exterminate all doctrine and Christian Groups that would interfere with controlling the masses.

For the Gospel to come again, in its fullest and purest form, it needed to be restored anew, which God has done over and over again in Earth's History, as man has fallen from him.

The similarity of the Masonic Rites in the Mormon Church. The Mason's adopted the rites, although a bit changed from how it was meant to. They obtained them from records, from what I have learned, from the Jewish Temples which were partially destroyed. The similarity is because both came from different points in time, from a correct or true source. One has to have the Spirit to thrash through all of the info in the world to find the truth.

The reality is, it depends on your point of reality, Mormon's don't have Masonic Rites, if one can use that word, they have Hebrew Israelite rites, which were restored by God in the last days, along with everything need to gather Israel in for the last time, in preparation for the Lord's Second Coming.

There is a ton of info online, some true, some partly true and etc down the line. With out the Holy Ghost correctly tuned in, the real truth about most things in the world are hard to figure out, not just about Mormon's.
