Mount St. Helens Notice of Volcanic Unrest

September 26, 2004 3:00 P.M., PDT

Seismic activity at Mount St. Helens has changed significantly during the past 24 hours and the changes make us believe that there is an increased likelihood of a hazardous event, which warrants release of this Notice of Volcanic Unrest. The swarm of very small, shallow earthquakes (Less than Magnitude 1) that began on the morning of 23
September peaked about mid-day on 24 September and slowly declined through yesterday morning. However, since then the character of the swarm has changed to include more than ten larger earthquakes
(Magnitude 2-2.8), the most in a 24-hr period since the eruption of
October 1986. In addition, some of the earthquakes are of a type that suggests the involvement of pressurized fluids (Water and steam) or perhaps magma. The events are still occurring at shallow depths (Less than one mile) below the lava dome that formed in the crater between
1980 and 1986.

SAN MARCOS, Mexico - The Volcano of Fire has rumbled back to life with its strongest eruptions in 20 years, spewing lava and ash clouds that had some residents who remained in their homes Wednesday casting nervous glances at the peak.

... Snip ...

"I think that we"Re seeing something similar to what occurred a century ago," said Dominguez, of the University of Colima. "We are comparing it to 1903, when there were more than 200 explosions in one year."

"It's possible that we will see another one like 1913 in the coming decade," he added.

Federal Civil Protection Coordinator Carmen Segura headed to the volcano zone Wednesday and said officials planned to improve their monitoring.

These are some amazing photos of a volcano erupting in Chile, The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain. The lightning is incredible, and seeing the ash on the ground as thick as snow is just crazy.

Yes the photos of the ash plume and the lightning was really amazing to look at. I think it was real interesting to know that the plume could do something like that.

Volcanoes get quiet before they erupt

Until now, there has not been a way to forecast eruptions of restless volcanoes because of the constant seismic activity and gas and steam emissions. Volcanologists have shown that periods of seismic quiet occur immediately before eruptions and can be used to forecast an eruption. The duration of the silence can indicate the level of energy that will be released. Longer quiet periods mean a bigger bang. Ref. Source 8v.

Falling sea level caused volcanoes to overflow. During the transition to the last ice age approximately 80,000 years ago global temperature declined, while the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere remained relatively stable. Scientists have now discovered that a falling sea level may have caused enhanced volcanic activity in the ocean, which can explain the anomaly. Source 1l.
