A new CNN/ORC International Poll finds more Americans support legal same-sex marriage and say they have a family member or close friend who is gay or lesbian.
According to the national survey, 57% of those polled say they have a family member or close friend who is gay or lesbian, up 12 points from 2007. The number of Americans who support same-sex marriage has risen from 40% in 2007 to 53%.
The survey results come a day before the Supreme Court begins hearing high-profile cases on same-sex marriage. Ref. CNN
In two rulings, the Supreme Court gave major victories to same-sex couples. In the first, it overturned a ban on federal benefits for same-sex married couples. In the second, a California case, the court dismissed an appeal. This means same-sex couples will be able to get married in that state. Ref. USAToday
The Treasury Department has ruled that legally married same-sex couples will be treated as married for federal tax purposes. Ref. CNN
Gay marriage bans in four states upheld on appeal
The same-sex marriage movement lost its first major case in a federal appeals court Thursday after a lengthy string of victories, creating a split among the nation's circuit courts that virtually guarantees Supreme Court review. The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit reversed district court rulings that had struck down gay marriage bans in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Ref. USAToday
