Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will step down at the request of President Barack Obama, who is seeking to reassure critics of his foreign policy, a senior administration official told CNN today.

Obama will appear in the Rose Garden this morning to make an announcement, the White House said.

The move, White House officials told The New York Times, was meant to acknowledge that new national security threats --- most notably ISIS --- call for different skills. Ref. CNN
