Actually, it happens a lot but they often burn up in the upper atmosphere. It's only the bigger rocks that get noticed like this one. Reminds anyone of the movie "Armageddon"?

Yes, I also thought about that. But this event was not so catastrophic if we consider what happened. With more information the number of the injured people would be way more lower and the Russians would now be counting only the damage to windows and other glass objects.
