Quasar leaves his cloak next to the entry door, as instructed. He takes off his boots, putting them by the entrance too, and sits on the floor next to the fire, grateful for the warmth of the house after the wind and rain he had to face outside.
The magician will enjoy the fireplace, waiting for the farmer to talk or dinner to be served.
The party settles in, and a short time later Maudie returns with steaming bowls filled with stew made from vegetables and potatoes. She thrusts them at each person in turn, seeming almost angry as she does so. She hands her husband his food.
"I'm going to eat upstairs. Make sure they don't steal nothin'."
Maudie stomps upstairs with her bowl of stew.
The farmer sits staring into the fire. Several times he seems on the verge of speaking, but he only sits, and slowly begins eating his stew.
Quasar is grateful for the hot food in such a cold and rainy day. He thanks the woman as he is given his bowl and starts eating without waiting for the soup to cool a little bit. The magician stays by the fire eating slowly. He waits for the farmer to speak or for anybody else to start a conversation.
"She wasn't always like this..." The farmer mutters, raising his eyes to meet those of the party, "And...and the townsfolk. They've been...different."
He hesitates, looking back into the fire.
"Old Bili threw me out of his store today. I've been doing business with Bili for over twenty years." The old man rubs his hands together as if he is cold despite the roaring fire, "And Dien's boy threw rocks at my cart, calling me an earth grubber, and like things. And not one passerby said anything, they just watched."
He sighs heavily, "Worst of all, whatever is happening has affected Maudie, in a massive way."
Quasar puts his bowl on the floor and turns towards the old farmer, dedicating to him all his attention. "The situation you describe is strange indeed", says the magician after pondering for a while the man's words. "Do you think that's because of a different attitude towards YOU in particular or is a more generic thing. What I mean, with all due respect, is: are you sure you didn't do anything that could anger the villagers?. And if no, why do you think this might be happening?".
The big picture in quasar's mind slowly starts to become more clear. He has a precise idea about the possible causes of the phenomenon that the farmer is describing but he wants to hear what the old man has to say about it.
Forthan takes his bowl and begins to eat. In between bites he says to the farmer. " I believe that this has to do with an artifact that has been rumored to be in the western part of this island and it is not of good. I believe that it is causing people here to behave differently. It is my mission to find this artifact and take it to the temple so it can be destroyed or contained safely so that the people it has effected can be returned to normal."
Forthan will turn to Quasar, "I am here to assist the Temple to the Goddess Latorium in retrieving this item and returning it to the temple so that it can be either destroyed or safely dealt with so it does not effect more and more people on this island and see that its influence does not spread elsewhere. I did not know its name before now. I take it your on a similar quest to retrieve this item?"
