"These side passages could be nothing more than the roots of the tree over head. I wonder if the radiation caused abnormal growth in the tree. Maybe even sustained beyond its normal life expectancy."

Gault will stop and at the next "Passageway", grab a hold of the walls framing the passageway.

In Character: "We need to check those passageways left and right thoroughly to see if we can find a way to keep moving without going down."

Out of Character: That chemical gadget should be able to tell if any hazardous chemical is in the air or in the thing, at least that's what I gathered from Uhura's past use of it in other missions.
