[movie] Excalibur (1981)

For those who are fans of Medieval lore and legend, this is the film to see. I was first introduced to this movie when I was 8 or 9 and have watched it several times since. Filmed in Ireland, it is, in my opinion, what the legend of King Arthur would have been like. What I enjoy about the movie is that Arthur is not the end all of the movie; it revolves heavily around the mystique of the 'Sword of Power' and also the 'Quest of the Holy Grail'.
There are some well-known actors in this movie as well, for many of whom this was one of their first roles. Some of the notables are Gabriel Byrne (Stigmata), Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Liam Neeson (Star Wars). I own this movie and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for action, romance, drama and a well developed storyline. I give it a 5 out of 5, 2 thumbs up, whatever the highest rating is. What is your opinion? Have you seen it?

Excalibur is a very good movie, a little "adult" in places, but I agree that it is the best Arthurian-themed film out there. There are some great lines in it too from Rospo Pellenberg (sp?), the writer.

I'm a great fan of the music (listen to the bit where Arthur is being taken in the boat by the maidens to Avalon!), but I believe the music was never recorded properly and so only rare poor quality recordings survive wink.gif

I saw "King Arthur" a few weeks ago, it was OK but hardly inspiring. Great music though - I would recommend the soundtrack which has Clannad's involvement (winners of the music award for Robin of Sherwood which Ray Winstone also appeared in as Will Scarlet (Sir Bors in the current film)).

Funny you would mention that dubhdara. I also enjoyed the music very much. My favorite scene with music is when Arthur drinks from the Holy Grail, rounds up his remaining troops and starts riding through the lands. As the trees begin to flourish again, the marching song they are playing in the background is very regal and imposing. I also like the sound effects when Excalibur is involved in a scene; it is very representative of the magic that surrounds the sword.

Excalibur movie

I loved Excalibur, unfortunately, I haven't seen it in years. Is it on DVD by any chance? I would love to pick it up. I loved the atmosphere of the movie, and the cherub faced armor was creepy looking.

I own the DVD and there is a director's version where he talks about different scenes and his ideas behind them, some of the problems he had, etc. It is very interesting, especially if you have the movie memorized like I do wink.gif

Memorized huh?

OK. This is one of my favourite quotations from the film:

"I've often thought.. that in the hereafter of our lives. When I owed no more to the future.. I can be.. just a man.

That we may meet, and you will come to me.. and claim me yours.. and know that I am your husband....

It is a dream I have...."

- King Arthur, "Excalibur"

Which scene????
