Well how's this some food for thought? Our economy is soley based apon a free market society. But there are restrictions of course. Now, the government is there to put restrictions on business to help you. Now, I know that sounds absoleutley perposterous to a lot of people on this site (I think it's been established that most of you guys are right winged conservatists). But, a government that holds a free market and allows no restriction on businesses is bad. Competition is what makes our economy grow. If we let one business take control, what good does that do us? And on top of that, I sure don't want to live in the United Stores of Wal*mart. So that being said, if our government took no action to try and maintain "Fair" competition between business, well have you ever seen the movie "Death Race". If I'm not mistaken, that movie is based upon the government failing and business bought out the government. Either that or it's just Socialist propaganda, and I am part of the blinded youth that views the world in this polluted way.

As Long As We're Talking About Socialism
By Mark Harris
Ask yourself how democratic it is for the richest 1 percent of Americans to own 43 percent of all stock? Or for this same 1 percent to account for 33 percent of total household wealth, according to the Federal Reserve Bulletin? Is it far-fetched to suggest that class inequality and economic insecurity are permanent hallmarks of life under capitalism? Ref. Source 3
Rhieland:
You make some fairly big jumps in your assumptions that are quite debatable amongst themself.
We do have a relatively free market economic structure. There are rules that limit freedom. Those would be taxes to be paid by businesses, employee compensation and guides around hiring and firing. There are also fair business practice laws in place with limit the freedom (bait and switch is illegal) due to government regulation of the free market. I think you will have no arguments that some restrictions on free markets are appropriate - even from us fiscal conservatives (probably need to watch the right wing comment as that lumps me in a group with Pat Buchanon). It is when we have loosened the restrictions in place that have cause some serious issue with out economy, as it appears that no one could forecast the gaps in the system if the restrictions were lessened (S&L Crisis and the Current Mortgage Crisis). So should a mortgage company be allowed to own a insurance company that backs mortgages? Probably not...then you get to underwrite your own crappy loans...and that to a degree is what has happened. Everything was gravy until...the housing prices fell. If you have too much government intervention, you stiffle creativity and inflate prices to meet the guidelines. What wonderful inventions have come out of Socialist countries besides awesome militaries? K-mart used to be king when I was growing up and we never heard of a Wal-Mart. K-mart sat on its laurels and look where it is at today...it is dead. Today, we are getting cheaper goods through Wal-Mart. If Wal-Mart becomes too big and greedy, then someone else will topple them just like they did K-Mart. If they continually work towards providing good products cheaply, why should I have a government regulation to create a Wal-Mart Clone? Why should Wal-Mart suffer to keep this other entity alive. If the clone can beat Wal-Mart, they will be king. No one likes to shop at Wal-Mart. We have to if we want our IPODs, Wii's, 5 Gallons of Mayo and have enough money for a ballgame.
Today, seniors can save lots of money buying their drugs from Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart buys in bulk and passes the savings on to the seniors. Should the seniors pay more for their prescription meds to keep Joe's Pharmacy down the street in business? Joe might be a great guy, but seniors just dont have that kind of coin to toss around...least not the ones I know.
Lastly, the government that I vote for is not there to put restrictions on business. The politicians we elect are their to serve our needs and to represent the people that elected them. If you want "Big Brother" watching and supporting, fine...you want socialism. If you want as little interference from the federal government as possible...you are a conservative...and not necessarily a right wing one.

The more and more I hear of people talking about America becoming a socialist state the more I do not see it. Granted we have some more of big brother doing this and that but so far I do not see them trying to take more of our freedoms away. I may have missed something but I do not see that much change in the past 100 days. I will continue to watch and observe and see just what comes down the pipe line in the next 100 days.
I see creeping socialism in confiscatory taxes, government interference in business, and a growing entitlement industry for industries and individuals. The huge bailouts are just symptoms of the problem.
Granted that we are not Sweden or France, with 70% taxes for the moderately wealthy. Nor have we nationalized the oil industry like Mexico. But we are creating ever greater class warfare with attacks against the "rich," now defined as any family making more than $250,000 per year.
We also see more and more attacks on personal liberty, in the forms of ever stronger attempts to limit gun rights, freedom of speach, even religious rights. (I think we have more in-depth discussions about these subjects on the board.)

March to Socialism
How do you sell socialism to the American public? President Obama has learned that you just say you"re doing the opposite with a straight face. How else could he seriously say he was fretting about "wasteful spending, bloated programs, and inefficient results." Ref. Source 8
