Ramadan

Ramadan or Ramadhan (Arabic: رمضان ) is the ninth month of the Islamic year. Siyam or Saum ("fasting" in English) is the fourth of the Five Pillars of Islam and involves fasting during Ramadan.

I personally dont celebrate Ramadan but when I lived in Trinidad I had a number of Islamic friends in school and frequently visited with them during Ramadan. I especially enjoyed the foods and sweets that were made for the culmination of Ramadan, described as Eid-ul-Fitr. That was my favorite part of the celebration!

I have a lot of respect for people in Ramadan. Back when I used to be a plasterer I remember being on a building site on a really hot day. There was this gang of middle eastern men cement rendering the outside of the building.

I couldn't believe that they could work all day in the hot sun without food or drink under those conditions. I have to admit that there's no way I could. My hat goes off to them.
