Answering The Phone - Page 2

About ten years ago my brother answered the phone to hear: "You will die," and the caller hung up. Our response afterward was- "Well, DUH!"

Earlier this year, I received a very odd call. When I answered the guy said "You didn't pay your rent." I wasn't sure I had heard the guy right, so I questioned what he said, and he repeated, "You didn't pay your rent." Well, given that it was very late, and I had just dropped off my rent check an hour or so earlier, I hung up. My first thought was that it was somebody randomly dialing a number, because my number is unlisted. My second thought was that since I had put the check into the overnight drop box, it had somehow fallen out and somebody found it and decided to have some fun. I was almost positive that the check had gone all the way in, but, just to be safe, I called to confirm that my rent check had been received. It had. Satisfied, I put the call out of my mind. Later that day I found out that the caller was actually a relative who had been hitting the sauce the night before.

Isn't family wonderful.

Phone Answering

I answer with a "Hello?" I use different tones when I say it though, which has caused confusion. Last Spring my roommate and I apparently sounded the same over the phone, and anytime we'd called, we happened to answer the phone the exact same way. We kinda put on this little girl tone, and it was just irony that we happened to do the same thing.

If I recognize the no. (on my cell phone ) is one thing but if I do not then I will answer in a cool business way.
A strange story was when some companies check the phones of the employes and they call all the no on the bill and ask who is there? I lost myself and give them my name but I should have say something funny but this things comes to you usually long way after...

I don't have a specific way that I always answer the phone. It usually comes out, "Hello," but I always make an effort to sound happy. Even if somebody calls me at 3:00 in the morning, I clear my throat and put on my 'of course I wasn't asleep' voice, even though I obviously was. I try to be especially cheerful and polite to telemarketers, because I know they get a lot of verbal abuse from people. I usually tell them honestly that I'm not interested and would like to be removed from their lists, but I try to be as pleasant as I can about it.

Regarding threatening phone calls, I would probably take the same approach - speak happily and politely, trying to see what the person really wanted. If the caller persisted in mysterious weirdness, rather than giving me information, I would hang up and forget about it. If a pattern of threatening calls developed, I might consider asking the phone company to put a trace on my line. I suppose my attitude toward this type of threat is fairly laid back, since I am a single male. When I have a wife and eventually children, I will probably be much more cautious because of concern for their safety.

Phone Answering

Oh, boy! biggrin.gif When we are up at my in-laws house, any of us will answer with things like, "Home of the criminally insane" or " (last name) zoo! We feed 'em, you hear them" Sometimes if it is someone I know well I will sing, such as, "Zippidee Doo Da, Zippidee Ay. My, oh my, what a wonderful day!" or " You just called, to say, you love me!" laugh.gif I love to joke and laugh with family and friends. If I called someone and they said that, obviously (according to the above smile.gif ) I would laugh and try to come back with something clever, quick!

Answering The Phone

QUOTE
The military managed to instill in me a "correct" way of answering the phone. It is the same for me at home or at work. Either my last name's residence or store name, my first name speaking, how may I help you sir/mam?

To be honest there is no correct way to answer a phone. Most people tend to have a little fun with the phone. I myself answer the phone with yellow or city morgue or (person's name) meat market, can't beat our meat. If it was a telemarketer on the phone I would be polite and ask them not to call back and tell them, I was not interested in what they were selling or ask if they accepted food stamps for their item. It's a little rude I guess to act in such a way but humor is a weird attribute. Some people have some don't in a manner.

I usually respond with a chipper "Howdy, what's up?" this seems to be well received by people whether they are calling for business or pleasure. But at work I assume a more professional "Dairy Queen" no how may I help you or anything as most calls are from friends of my co-workers. One thing worthy of note is that everyone who calls me that doesn't know me thinks I'm a girl- I don't know why, I think it's because I'm usually polite.
If somebody tried to creep me out over the phone by saying they were watching me I would probably think it was either a family member or a prank caller and play along by saying "Oh yea, can you see that bird on my finger too?" smile.gif

I always answer with a "Hello" alone though my tone varies depending on my mood. I know its polite to answer with a jolly-good attitude but sometimes, try as I might, it just doesn't happen! What really annoys me is when the caller asks "who is this?". If you dont know then why are you calling?! In my opinion, it doesn't matter as much if the person answering gives their name when compared to the caller giving their name..Has anyone ever called you and half-way through the conversation, you're still struggling to figure out who you're talking too? That's happened to me one too many times!
As for funny lines..we had on our answering machine once "Good people are hard to find, plz leave name & number and we'll get back to you!"
I also heard the one "Hello, City Morgue. You kill 'em, we chill 'em!"
