Mormons Skip Heart Disease
The Mormons were featured on Good Morning America today as having 'good hearts' literally because of their practice of fasting monthly. Researchers said before that it may have been due to their avoidance of smoking and alcohol, but are saying that Mormon monthly fasts also help.
I think it is good that fasting is the reason for healthier hearts, nevertheless a closer look at most LDS member's diet (excess of fats, meats, etc) would actually put them in the same kind of risk for heart disease.
I believe there is a connection to staying healthy and fasting. I believe I should fast more often. Also the habits you have when you do eat is also a part of it. Eating foods that are unhealthy for you is not the way to spend the rest of the month eating if your fasting once a month.

Benjamin Horne, director of cardiovascular and genetic epidemiology at the Intermountain Heart Institute at IMC, says his working hypothesis is that such fasts can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Such benefits have shown up in three previous studies at the Murray-based institute. Ref. Source 3
