A West Virginia sheriff was slain today by a gunman who walked up to his SUV and shot him point-blank, authorities say.
The lawman was Mingo County Sheriff Walter E. "Eugene" Crum, 59, said Marsha Dadisman, director of communication for the state Department of Health and Human Services.
The Williamson Daily News reported that Crum was in his sport-utility vehicle in downtown Williamson when a man drove into the parking lot, approached his SUV and shot him point-blank.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a statement, saying in part: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Crum family." Ref. CNN
