A beautiful young girl wasted because some idiots decided that they were going to take advantage of her. As a woman this makes me so angry and I just want to cry for her and her family. I hope those boys feel the pain of what they did, prison shouldn't be made enjoyable at all.

I think is really time for all of us to stop and think about why the world is drifting away in such an alarming manner. Is getting worse every year. The new generations don't have any kind of limit, moral or practical. I'm not an old moralist wanting to point my finger against anything that is new or modern, is the opposite. But sometimes I find myself completely astonished. Violence and danger are part of life, they have always been, but now they don't come only from unknown strangers they are everywhere.

I remember dozens of parties like that one, when I was a teenager and after. A story like this one would never have happened. Everybody was drunk, sometimes even using light drugs, and it happened quite often that a girl could pass out or be completely stoned. Somebody would bring her in a bedroom, lay her on the bed with some water at hand and then just go check every now and then to see if everything was ok. Reading this story makes me realize how similar and at the same time how different was the world in which I spent my youth. A sexual assault on a schoolmate was just beyond any imagination, no matter how pretty or sexy she might be or how much alcohol the boys might have ingested. I feel sad. For the girl, of course, but also for all the teenagers that lost the freedom to be young and enjoy life in a crazy and reckless way, at times, but without having to fear the worse from their own friends.

In all due respect, teenagers and alcohol is illegal in this country. Adults cannot even control themselves when they are drunk, let alone young teenagers! We need to stop feeding the idea that in order to have fun you must drink, that's not fun it's being stupid and irresponsible. I'm glad they caught the teenagers and I hope they pay a high price for what they have done.

In all due respect, this is an international forum and not your Country (in my Country, for instance, at 14 years old you can drink light alcoholic beverages like beer). Moreover, I'm not feeding the idea that you must drink to have fun. Is a fact and not a theory that every teenage party, in any part of our big and various world, includes alcoholic beverages. It was like that in the parties I joined in Italy when I was a teenager, it was just the same for my father, my uncles and is just the same here in Indonesia where alcohol is not only illegal for teenagers but is considered a capital sin against morality and religion for people of any age!
I like to drink. I often have a beer with a friend and, when still in my Country, I used to accompany my meals with good wine. Thank you for considering me a stupid and an irresponsible.

This said, I think that if we blamed what happened on the consumption of alcoholic drinks (that were most probably just beers) we are totally missing the point. People always consumed alcohol, but is the first time in my life that I hear of a group of 15 year old guys that, after a couple of beers, decide to rape a schoolmate that just passed out. In my opinion, the society is changing. Human relationships are becoming always more impersonal and the new generations tend to consider the people around them as a way to obtain something rather than as other human beings. Your neighbor or your schoolmate is now only a tool, something useful because makes your life better.

With some differences, the situation is similar everywhere around the world, at least from what I hear from the expats and tourists that I meet here. Chatrooms, social networks and the use of electronic devices for daily communication (think of e-mails and [SMS]) have deprived the new generations of something that has always been the first and main step for socialization: human contact. Now is not necessary anymore. I can meet anybody online, I just need a phone number to start interacting with people of my age and, if the interaction is not successful, nothing will happen. This means that social control and social judgement are not obstacles anymore. Is easier to harass somebody you don't know (trolls) or persecute a schoolmate (cyberbullies) if you are anonymous and you can't see the real effect or your actions.

Is like having to kill 50 people stabbing each of them with a knife or doing the same just pushing a button from a room that is many kilometers away from where the targets are. Only very few people could accomplish the first while, in the second case, almost anybody could become a serial killer. Your victims cease to be human beings to become a generic identity on the web or a phone number on your mobile device. Is a short step transferring this mentality from the web to real life. The only solution, in my opinion, would be find a way to bring back the human factor into everyday social interaction. A task that nowadays is nearly impossible.

It is crazy to me to think that teenagers are using drugs in parties, they are drunk yet have the ability to check whether a friend is okay or not, I don't believe that for a second. Excess of alcohol AND drugs IMPAIR your ability to make right choices. That's a plain fact. Therefore, what is surprising about this case?

Sleuth, what I meant is that I don't think that without alcohol the situation would have been different. Why 20 years ago drunk teenagers were playing football in the park or talking (or, yes, maybe shouting) about silly subjects while now they rape an unconscious schoolmate? Beers are the same as 20 years ago, people have changed. Teenagers now have far less inhibitions than the young people of only a few years ago. This would not be so terrible if the modern society didn't bombard their minds with information and examples that are contrasting and not filtered. We treat them as adults or, better, the commercial world treats them as adults (think of the colored cartoon-like cigarette boxes that have been recently forbidden in many western Countries) but they are not ready, they still need guidance and help in telling what is right from what is wrong. To make everything worse, many parents forget about the meaning of being a parent, busy with their work, their lives or their hobbies. Sadly, I see this last thing happening often and often so I fear that the next generations of teenagers, the children of today, will be even worse.
