Sudan History & Civil Business Politics

How it happened is based on a long history of struggle. People are doing something, but it is most likely not enough. The media is focusing so much on Iraq that something as big as 10,000 people dieing in a month is not 'big enough' for major coverage. It shows where the world's thinking is... one two soldiers die and they make a big deal a country's population, innocent children are dying and nobody cares much, because it is 'only' Africa.

Conservatives, especially the "religious right" have been screaming about this situation for over a decade. The US government has been extremely resistant, both under Clinton and Bush, to take any action whatsoever concerning the Sudan. This really falls under the purview of the UN, but they also refuse to address it.

Personally, I believe that the UN reluctance has mostly to do with the fact that it is a Muslim government that is involved in the atrocities that have led to the humanitarian disaster. For example, the government has provided full authorization and support for the slaughter of millions of Christian and animist adults in the Sudan, and the massive enslavement of the children. There are now reports coming out that the Christian children are severely sexually abused, even after forced conversion into Islam.

Why is that?. I would personally not mind if what they want to do is help this people receive food, medicine and assistance.

I am appalled that so much time and attention is being wasted on Iran, a country that has no visible threat, when genocide is occurring in countries like Sudan.

It now appears that the conflict in western Sudan has claimed anywhere between 70,000 to 400,000 lives in just three years. The UN estimates this figure is close to 180,000.

This conflict is between Sudan's government, who have been accused of links to Arab militias known as Janjaweed, and rebels. The latest news suggest that the warring parties are no closer to a peace deal, negotiations have been in progress for a long time.

Darfur peace hopes collapse as rebels reject proposed deal

Hopes for a breakthrough in peace talks on the Darfur conflict were dashed last night when two of the main rebel groups refused to sign a proposed agreement only hours before a deadline expired.

The Sudanese government and the rebels had been under enormous pressure from the US, Europe and other African states to reach a deal over the conflict that has seen up to 3 million people displaced and tens of thousands killed.

Already there is a refugee camp of over 2 million people in the region, which would be the third largest city in Australia. I have seen pictures of this makeshift slum and was shocked by the images I saw.

How can we let countries descend to such a terrible state? The Sudanese are humans, just like the rest of us. Do we care less about their cause because they aren't sitting on vast amounts of resources?

To its credit, the US has spoken out about this and provided aid with other western nations. But all countries refuse to secure the region. According to the UN, Middle East nations aren't even supplying money for aid for this grief stricken region.

Apart from the spiralling death toll, rapes at the refugee camps and in general are estimated to be at some of the highest levels in the world. If just a fraction of the money that was spent in recent conflicts was poured into Sudan imagine the difference it could make.

Here is a glimmer of hope in the Darfur tragedy. My only hope is that it is not simply a pipe dream.

Darfur peace deal brings new hope

QUOTE
The main rebel group in Sudan's strife-torn Darfur region signed a peace agreement Friday aimed at ending the violence that has spawned what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

https://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/africa/05/05...alks/index.html

The main problem with this is at only 1 of the 3 main rebel groups has signed the peace agreement. The death toll in the region has reached 180,000 with another 2 million people forced from their homes. This is the worse form of genocide the world has seen in many, many years.
