According to the Social Security Administration in the US, Emily was the #1 name in 2004 in the entire country. My daughter's name is Emily, so I would be biased to the name anyway.

In High School I heard of a family where the kids were all named after trees: Tamarack, Cherry, Cedar.... I can't remember the rest, but I can sure think of more possibilities, Juniper for example. I actually think all of those names are very nice, though Tamarack seems a little extreme.
I also think Christmas names are pretty: Holly, Ivy, Joy, etc.
My name is an example of a common word used for a name (Cherry). It's even spelt the same. My grandmother's middle name is Rose. Growing up, neither one of us were too thrilled about our names. Those are the only two common word names that I'm aware of in my family in the last few generations. I personally like traditional names that aren't common words or places. I think parents sometimes get too creative with names not realizing that the kid will be stuck with that name forever, unless they have it legally changed.
I will probably be pretty cautious about naming kids when bwren and I get ready to start our family. I will definitely stay away from fruit names.
