Can Opener

How many times have you heard people complain about the difficulty of opening a can? In this thread we can talk about both the electric and manual types.

I will always keep a manual can opener around the house, because I know I can rely on it to work. Electric openers that I have tried have been more of a pain than a convenience. I suppose if you have one of those electric openers that are installed on the kitchen counters or cabinets then it probably wont be that bad. I still use the manual can opener all the time.

If only! I would love to find an electric can opener that actually works properly. The best type of manual can opener I've used is one that is fastened to a wall or cabinet and has a large hand crank. It's very heavy-duty and I love it!

My hands and wrists are becoming so painful, I'll have to find a better way than the manual openers. It won't be long...

I have used nearly every brand of electric can opener in the US and they are all a pain in the neck as malexander said. My ex-sister-in-law had a B & D under the cabinet one and it caught on fire. She got a whole new kitchen courtesy of B & D!

The BEST manual opener by far is the brand 'Swing Away'. It comes in a wall mount and two hand styles. I prefer the bigger hand style. I do have a wall mount ~ I have never used it because I never had a place on the wall that was convienent or sturdy enough for it.

We have had all kinds of can openers. The only true and faithful one is the regular survival type where you have to hit it into the can to create a hole and then use jerking motions to cut through the metal similar to a scissors. Of course with that method LDS calls me to open all the cans wink.gif

Wow, JB, when I said manual, I was thinking about the one that you clamp on the side and turn the knob. The one you just mentioned is really old-school, manual. I havent used one of those since I lived in Trinidad!

I know of a couple of places to get the old "army" style can openers, for less than $1 each. These are great for food storage and emergency supplies, because they are cheap, small, and easily replaced. They also do a great job of opening cans.

Fortunately, I only had to use one once in the military, as we had "c-rations" once in basic training. After that, we had MREs.

Most basic swiss army knives and multi-purpose tools have similar can openers on them as well.

laugh.gif Yeah, our last can opener was like that and it does not work anymore, so we went shopping for one to replace it and the really good ones are expensive so I thought - why buy something so pricey only to get rid of it in a few months - thus came about the survival can opener! Of course LDS raised a brow when I bought it - hence my new can kitchen duties are in order.
