I do not disagree with you Zues, but I also think it is being over annualized at the same time and in the wrong way. The whole thing smells of media hype. Not within this thread of course, but in the media in general.

I agree with Senzoo. The total ban on knives and other items on commercial planes is one of the consequences of the emotional wave that followed the tragedy on 09/11. Is not important, in my opinion, if this restriction will help prevent further incidents as long as it contributes to the feeling that something positive has been done. Specially when it comes to the approach that the media have towards the subject.
The fact that you can not take any type of weapon aboard a plane nowadays is stupid and hard to understand in my opinion. Anyone can get a weapon aboard a plane if they really tried so having a plane full of unarmed and undefended people is what a terrorist is looking for. I think some restrictions should be in place for hand guns and larger weapons as those do need to be restricted. But relax the restrictions on small knives and some small pocket items. I myself carry a gerber multi-tool and I am not going to get on a plane to hijack it. Then again right now I can not get on a plane with it.
I believe there is a way to protect the normal civilians and have a safe flight or even train ride without going over board in the name of protecting us all from potential terrorists. The main job of the TSA is to ensure safety for all and to make our trips pleasurable with as little of a delay as possible. The main thing I would like to see changed in the policies they use is to treat everyone better and use some common cense. I believe this will help everyone.
I agree that people should be able to carry knives on planes. It could only attack a person at a time, and doesn't leave passengers completely defenseless, though size and/or type of knife should be limited. And, if we want to abolish every possible weapon or attack method, the room would need to be nothing but padded walls, with everyone in straight jackets. Restrictions need to be relatively loose or strict, or else give an advantage to the obvious society of millions of terrorists who just live to kill others.
