I learned how to drive in a standard shift, and owned standard shift vehicles up until about 7 years ago when I got my first automatic transmission. It is nice to just jump in and go! However, the control that you have over your vehicle with a standard shift is preferable to the automatic, but in traffic an automatic is better (your feet don't get so tired!). I can't tell you how many times I've had to "push start" one of my cars!! Oy! But it's better to have that option than not, and I will probably own another standard shift some day.... I kind of miss my old VW

I have had both manual and automatic cars, and I like the 5-speed manuals the best. Automatics have a quicker start from a complete stop, but the 5-speed or 6-speed will get you past 150 MPH. Manuals are also 10x cheaper to repair. With a space cruiser Automatic would be much better.
I love driving my standard. I have a lot more control over my car, and I'm even more conscious about my speed. Plus, it's just a lot more fun. Although, it does get tedious, especially commuting to and from school everyday. If I'm not feeling well, it hurts me to try to shift. But I like it.
My preference depends upon the situation and the vehicle. If it is a 4-cylinder car, then I must have a stick. Automatics in the 4-cylinder variety don't have enough pickup for me. When pulling out in traffic, I want to control when to shift, etc. I also prefer a stick in the snow. I feel I have much more control that way. I control which gear I am in and I can much better control the amount of power given to the wheels as I start up from a stop. Much less spinning out...at least for me.
However, in traffic, a stick...stinks! Much too much work and my knee gets sore from working the clutch constantly. So, if I have 6-cylinders or more (which gas prices currently prevent) I go for the automatic.
I have always really love to drive a standard automobile. It may be sort of a power trip or something but I like to feel as if I am in as much control of the vehicle as possible. I drive currently a 2005 Civic Hybrid with a 5 speed transmission and I love it.
*Sports cars are a must have manual because who wants a sports car that is automatic anyway?
Even in a space cruiser I think I would have to go with a stick shift. There again it may be a power trip or something but I want to be in total control.
I can drive a standard, but the transmission does not thank me for it! I have an automatic because where I live it's nothing but hill-starts for me. And, in the winter when the weather is already bad, I don't want to think about shifting too. I'm a scaredy cat!
My attempts at driving a stick shift could make the show "Funniest Home Videos." I'm normally a good driver, but I don't have the coordination or the patience for the stick shift.
When I was about 16, my mother tried to teach me. The lesson ended with me screaming "I can't do it." I stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road and made my mother drive home. I couldn't even get it out of first.
When bwren got his civic, he tried to teach me. We practice in the mall parking lot. I jerked the car, stalled the car, grinded the transmission, and squealed the tires. I began crying "I can't do it", but bwren made me keep going.
I decided to surprise bwren and pick him up at the airport in the civic. I was praying I wouldn't hit any red lights. Of course, I hit every one. I again jerked the car, stalled the car, grinded the transmission, and squealed the tires. But I finally made it to the airport. When I pulled in the parking lot, my legs were so shaky and my heart was pounding out of my chest. I haven't driven the car since and have decided that I am meant to drive automatics. Of course that kills my dreams of being a race car driver
