Many users log on to the forum on a daily basis but do not post or reply to anything. This thread has been started to analyze the reason for this kind of user action.
For those selecting:
You did not see any interesting topics
I want to ask just to find out so we can better our service here...
'Interesting' in regards to exact topics you are tracking or in general? If in general how come you did not start some to insight discussion or has most things been covered?
Did you check the latest topics or do you just skim over the index? From observation I notice that most users log on and then look at the index for the latest messages, but that is not effective because the index only shows the latest thread out of three or four boards. Also, when check the latest topics the person only checks 'today's posts' and they have not logged on for a number of days. It is necessary to check 'today's and 2-3 days' ago to see what has been going on.
Lastly, notification of replies is important in a WORKING Email. Many times I have seen people start their own thread and then never return to follow up with the replies, is it that they find their own threads not interesting? Also, the reason I mentioned 'working' Email is because a lot of users open a 'junk' address and then do not check the Emails going there.
I try to log on every day, and so checking the latest topics is a good indicator for me, of recent discussions. I attempt to start discussions but most times dont really have a topic in mind. I think the bots are doing a great job of starting new topics; ones that I should have thought of but didnt.
I'm just pressed for time lately. It's starting to get annoying! But I usually post at least one message when I log in. I check the "Hot Topics" first thing, and try to answer those that I have an opinion about, as well as greeting new members. There are some topics I just don't know anything about, and I'm not going to waste the bandwidth to say "I know nothing about this" unless I specifically want to know more about it.

Having just joined, there are always old subjects which I can reply to if no new ones. The only reason I may not post is that I'm busy - you know, school, homework, I'm still in that stage.

A lot of times my brain just doesn't feel like working because I get so burnt out with school. I'll look at a topic, and may find it interesting, but I know that if I try to reply at that moment it will just be a bunch of fluff instead of something actually insightful, and I would rather wait a few days until my eyes are uncrossed before replying. After being in journalism, I could easily write fluff and make it sound real and convincing, but I would rather not.
Another reason is that sometimes it may not interest me at that moment. Not saying that the actual topic is boring, but it's just not sparking something inside of me the first time I read it. There have been several instances where I read a post and found it boring, but a week or two later, I re-read it and have this huge motivation to reply to it. It's all about my mood.
I agree that sometimes I just don't have the most energy to put into a post and I feel that if I am going to post, I want to do my best. However, even at my best I still make mistakes sometimes in posting, like when I forgot to quote a resource. Sometimes I may come online if I can't sleep and it is just nice to read. I tried to post in my blog a few nights ago, and I just kept nodding off. I should have gone to bed, but I wanted to finish it. I have started to copy and save what I have started to post in a thread if I get too worn out or if I am going to step away to be with my family. So, if there was an option of being too tired to put together a good and constructive post that was well thought out I would choose that one. This is not often the case, but it happens.
