A South Korean ship with about 450 passengers is sinking off the country's southwestern coast, CNN affiliate YTN reports.

A rescue operation is underway, and the Mokpo coast guard tells CNN that 56 passengers so far were rescued. The rest were wearing life jackets and awaiting rescue. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

Among the passengers are about 320 students traveling with teachers to the resort island of Jeju. About 20 crew members also are on board. Ref. CNN

In a press conference, South Korea's security ministry provided updated figures on the ferry sinking: The ferry was carrying 459 people. Among them were 325 students, 15 teachers, 30 crew members, and 89 other passengers. Two people are dead, 164 have been rescued and 293 are still unaccounted for. Ref. CNN

Evacuation came too late on sinking ferry

An immediate evacuation order was not issued for the ferry that sank off South Korea's southern coast, likely with scores of people trapped inside, because officers on the bridge were trying to stabilise the vessel after it started to list amid confusion and chaos, a crew member said Thursday (Local time). The vice principal of Ansan Danwon High School, who was rescued from the sunken South Korean ferry, was found hanging from a tree, police said Friday. The school had hundreds of students aboard the doomed ferry.

Police did not offer more information about the death.

On Friday, divers raced to reach hundreds of people believed to be inside the ferry. The death toll from the disaster rose to 28. Ref. CNN

The captain in the South Korean ferry disaster has been criminally charged and is in custody.

Lee Joon Seok faces fives charges, including negligence leading to sinking the ship, abandoning the ship, causing bodily injury resulting in death and not seeking rescue from nearby ships, the news agency Yonhap reported, citing prosecutors and police.

The cause of the accident still isn't known. But a South Korean prosecutor said Lee wasn't in the steering room when the ferry started to sink. A third mate was at the helm. Ref. CNN
