Justice in the life and conduct of the State is possible only as first it resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens
-- Plato : Ancient Greek philosopher (428/427-348/347 B.C.)
I recently took a philosophical law class at the Uof M. These are some of my favorite quotes by relatively well known philosophers. John Stuart Mill and JJ Rousseau are also eloquent writers on law and its theories, but they are more romantic in their thinking.
The only stable state is the one in which all men are equal before the law.
- Aristotle
In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so.
- Immanuel Kant
Are not laws dangerous which inhibit the passions? Compare the centuries of anarchy with those of the strongest legalism in any country you like and you will see that it is only when the laws are silent that the greatest actions appear.
- Marquis de Sade
