Jim Caveizel has been one of my favorite actors long before the Passion of the Christ came out. What was so weird was way back before they announced who was going to be portraying Jesus, I was telling a friend of mine that he would be awesome at it.
He's played the good, loveable guy, the broken hearted guy, the seems innocent then turns psycho guy. He is truly an amazing and talented actor. He's been in Angel Eyes, Count of Monte Cristo, Frequency, High Crimes, and several other movies.
Plus, he keeps, for the most part, he's conscious about the parts he plays. Granted he has had one or two not so cool scenes in movies, but he has put his foot down about some things. In one movie he was supposed to take someone's shirt off, but he refused saying that he didn't want that much of the scene portrayed. He said he made them change it out of respect for God and for his wife.
I think he did an excellent job in the Passion. I also saw him recently in the Bobby Jones movie, and he was also superb in that role. Before the Passion, I did not know much about him, but now he seems to be a very good actor that can fit many roles.
