Just for the love of it? Is there a time when it is justified?

It's funny to me now that with the war in Iraq, not a single COngressman son or daughter are "serving" their country. I know becuase I went to highschool with half of them! I went to Langley HS in VA (basically up the street from CIA) for 11th and BCC Highschool in D.C for 12th grade. I've talked to real life Saudi Princes, Foreign Diplomats, Head of Corp. and their kids. Im telling you right now. The level of corruption in the world today is alot worse than you guys think. Not conspiracy, I swear my life to the fact.

Your statement is false. While Michael Moore made that claim in his movie, it has been well documented that it is false. Several Congress members have children currently serving in the military, and some of them, depending on the units they are in, are stationed in the war zone.

QUOTE
Moore's second statement is technically true, but duplicitous. Of course no-one would want to "sacrifice" his child in any way. But the fact is, Moore's opening ("only one") and his conclusion ("not a single member") are both incorrect. Sergeant Brooks Johnson, the son of South Dakota Democratic Senator Tim Johnson, serves in the 101st Airborne Division and fought in Iraq in 2003. The son of California Republican Representative Duncan Hunter quit his job after September 11, and enlisted in the Marines; his artillery unit was deployed in the heart of insurgent territory in February 2004. Delaware Senator Joseph Biden's son Beau is on active duty in the Judge Advocate General Corps; although Beau Biden has no control over where he is deployed, he has not been sent to Iraq, and therefore does not "count" for Moore's purposes. Seven members of Congress have been confirmed to have children in the military.

How about Cabinet members? Fahrenheit never raises the issue, because the answer would not fit Moore's thesis. Attorney General John Ashcroft's son is serving on the U.S.S. McFaul in the Persian Gulf.

Why not count Duncan Hunter's son? Note the phrasing: "only one had an enlisted son in Iraq." Although Hunter's son "enlisted" in the Marines, he is a Second Lieutenant, which means that he is above the rank of an "enlisted man." But why hide from the viewers how many Congressmen really have sons serving in the military in Iraq?

Alrighty but I have not been in school in the past 2 years so give me some leway. The ones that are in Active-Service guaranteed are not the foot soldiers, most likey safe administrative jobs. Anway it does not take from the fact that its all backwards. Dirty money is a *HUGE* part of our economy. People always make fun of politicians yet we do nothing to stop all the corruption. In a certain respect we cant. Say the choices we have for candidates in office, we are Offered those choices from the National Media & Local Media. The people that we elect we have no idea about. All the information we know abou t them is seen from their well thought out & funded campaign ads or other form. HAve you spoken to any1 of them? In fact let an average american list one of their state rep. or senator. Thats a task the majority wont be allowed to accomplish. Open your eyes, the people in Washignton use to walk around with white sheets over their heads not 30 years ago. Some of these senators get very comfortable on their seat being that they are elected over and over again. These guys are friends, go to each other house, some of their children go to the same school, and they have "Secret" meetings. I personaly knew Paul Bremers daughter (b*tch cheated on Chris) but some of the info. I learned from her and other schoolmates (with powerful parents) does go with alot of "paranoid-conspiracy" talk that everyone makes fun of. Mock me if you wish but all those tales of World Leaders, secret illuminati, etc; are definetly not false. The poor always seem to be the most patriotic, making up the vast members of our fighting force. why is that? They usually join right after school, not very educated, and alot are continueing military traditions.

I can guarantee you that a Sgt in the 101st is NOT in a REMF position.

Poor? Quite a few. Uneducated? Wrong.

Within this forum, right now, we have several members who have served in the military - honorably. I served for just less than 10 years in the USAF. We have at least one former Marine. We have had several others at various times from all the services (except possibly the Coast Guard). We have had people on here who were serving, at the time, in Iraq.

Your generalizations and stereotypes do yourself a huge disservice.

But im not making a generalization. Yes they are some educated but look at the fcts. When maj. come out of the military, their medium income is about 25,000-40,00 grand a year. Im talking about the foot-soldiers, not the special forces but the average soldier and the fact is alot of them have'nt gone to college, they come from alot of towns run by Companies. Take for example Clewiston, Florida. It's a factory town in the middle of nowhere and everything is influenced by the U.S Sugar Corporation. When I say they control everything I mean it becuase the town would'nt be there without them. The schools teaches curriculum the the company approves. Alot of it is anti-liberal, there is never a full perspective in anything. The newspaper's are scewed and generally the only way out is through military, family connections, or working for US Sugar Corp. the rest of your life. Kids go to school but they never are taught un-biased just info. to make good decisions. Majority of those serving in Active-Military comes from background as those. And im not putting down our fine members that fight for our freedom, im jsut saying the justification for sending these troops into the battlezone by their leaders are alot of times misleading in their true goals. It's not like a soldier can openly disagree, they are train to basically follow the higher rank offical blindly. After you go through some of the stuff that these soldiers do it tend's to make you a little cold, sorta like how most convicts are when they get out of jail and back to society. Believe m I havenothing against them (my dad was in the army) and I can justify the fact of what is stated above. It is not a disservice it is the truth.

Some interesting statistics on the American Armed Forces ...

Data on combat deaths in Iraq as of March 2005 surprised critics of the war. Contrary to the perception that citizen soldiers are bearing an inordinate portion of the overall burden, National Guardsmen constitute about 24 percent of all military personnel but accounted for 16 percent of those lost in Iraq. Some 95 percent of the fatalities had high-school diplomas, though only 85 percent of all Americans have finished high school. Blacks and Latinos made up 10.9 and 11.5 percent of the dead, respectively - about their same percentages in the general population, but in the case of blacks less than the 18.6 percent currently serving in the military. Twenty-nine percent of those who died attended high schools in poverty-stricken areas, versus about a 30 percent poverty rate for all high-school graduates. Seventy percent of those lost were white men, although they currently make up only about a third of the U.S. population.

In fact, minorities now make up about 31 percent of the U.S. population, and are slightly over-represented in the military, with a 35 percent participation among all active duty military personnel. But minorities represent 31.7 percent of all military deaths in Iraq-well below their numbers in the military. Whites, meanwhile, represent 65 percent of all active duty military personnel, but they constitute 69 percent of deaths in Iraq.

A total of 146,000 US military personnel remain in Iraq, along with some 15,000 British troops. They are stretched to the breaking point attempting to enforce the authority of the US occupation, and exert no meaningful control over large swathes of the country-including entire suburbs of Baghdad like the predominantly Shi"ite "Sadr City." The Washington Post reported June 25 that just 35 US troops are stationed in the Iraqi province of Diyala, which has a population of 1.4 million and extends from Baghdad's northeastern suburbs to the border with Iran.

Under such conditions, Iraqi guerillas are demonstrating an ability to move freely in and out of major cities and oil fields to launch attacks on US forces and carry out acts of sabotage. They are doing so with increasing signs of coordination and skill. Since May 1, when Bush declared the US military mission in Iraq to have been successfully completed, 57 US troops have been killed in combat and accidents, and dozens have suffered serious injuries.

Thousands of US Military Families Live in Poverty ...
But the armed services are also struggling with a more domestic issue. By the Pentagon's own estimate, thousands of military families live in poverty. Despite recent salary increases, many enlisted men and women say they can't afford food and other basic needs.

The U.S. military budget request for Fiscal Year 2006 is $441.6 billion. (This includes the Defence Department budget and funding for nuclear weapons activity of the Department of Energy Budget. It does not include other items such as money for the Afghan and Iraq wars ($49.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2006), or Homeland Security funding ($41.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2006), for example.)

In conclusion in my opinion the USA is using an Elephant approach to stamp out the ants. And this approach is of benefit to our enemies.

We are bankrupting the USA and this bankruptcy is more damaging to us than any attempted terrorist attack has been or could be.

On the otherhand Bin Laden spent 150,000 dollars to attack the USA, and the resulting damage to the American economy was in the trillions of dollars.

OVER REACTION and a false strategy will be our demise.

Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush: WAR

War Made Easy: How Presidents & Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death

Protests against the Bush administration and the Iraq War continued across the country over the Memorial Day weekend. Today we spend the hour looking at how presidents from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush sold wars to the American public. Media critic Norman Solomon and the Media Education Foundation have released a documentary titled "War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death." The film is based on Solomon's book of the same name. The film features extended commentary by Solomon and is narrated by Sean Penn.
