A lot of people talked about this movie and being an RM I was curious about it. It is not really worth the see unless you have a friend that is this way and you want to understand him/her better. Here is my blunt review...
1. You can see that whomever made this is homosexual, it is plagued by unnecessary homo sex scenes and gestures
2. There is nothing spiritual about the film. It does make some good points, but not in a manner that one could feel inspired.
3. It does show reality in some cases, things that the typical mormony types do not want to admit is out there, BUT it is... For instance. The RM who was a hidden homosexual did not feel he got love from his father. The father was shown as being more interested in Church and not the welfare of his family. The RM just wanted to be accepted and not judged. Of course that is fine, but you do not go on a mission with pre supposed ideas that your homosexual feelings should also be 'accepted'. I guess he did not want to serve a mission, he just did it to please his parents who expected it of him.
If you have questions, let me know.
This movie is a low budget film and there are some parts that are not done professionally (most of it, I would say it). Some points I observed:
Bad ones:
1. What Jackeline Bisset was doing there? I was shocked to see that such an actress would get involved in such controversial and non-story line like this movie.
2. No strong story line, some parts of the movie are really boring
3. They haven't researched enough about LDS doctrine and practises. There are lots of mistakes and misconceptions that are shown on the movie.
Good ones:
1. The actor that plays the RM, looks just like a missionary from Utah/Idaho and acts pretty much like one (in the good parts of course).
2. I liked the fact that when the homosexual guy tries to seduce the RM and is rejected, it made him think about how promiscous he really is and wanted to change.
3. Both of the main characters were people that lacked love and that's why they ended up together. As JB mentioned, the father of the RM was always busy with Church callings and doing things just for the 'LDS's fashion' but did not have a strong foundation of care and love.
4. It showed how some members of the Church perceive homosexuality. The mother of the RM was more concerned about 'what others will think' than the salvation of her own son.
In the end of the movie, you really feel sorry for both of them. Because they would not have ended up together if there was the kind of loving support that was needed at the time it was needed.
LDS_forever's review is very accurate too. I also will add because we did not see see this on the big screen we were able to fast forward through the nonsense parts. As an RM I can tell you that although the Missionaries seem extreme in their behavior at times there are those who come on their mission like that.
There is an email circulating about sending lots of letters and/or email to Blockbuster video stores about boycotting until they pull it from their shelves. Personally, I think this is ridiculous. They have movies with far worse stories or themes than "Latter Days" -- and even if it made a point, I doubt Blockbuster would do anything about it. This isn't about Blockbuster, it's about the studio that produced the movie; that's who you boycott or write to (in my opinion). And that's a shot in the dark also. What about Amazon.com? Do you think they'll stop selling it if there was an email campaign? Doubt it. I don't know, this one has my stomach in a knot and I'm not sure why.
I haven't actually watched the movie, and I doubt that I will. It really makes me sad that there is apparently a very big problem with homosexuality within the church membership, and that our missionaries can be so vulnerable.
IMO

Boycott Blockbuster? Who comes up with these ideas? The show does not say anything negative really about the Church, what it does is show that there are real people with real problems even IN the Church. I think members in general need to worry about more important things like giving service and seeing to their fellowmen if they want people to have a good impression about the Church. Trying to hide every 'glitch' that does not praise the Church is really counter productive in my opinion.
It really concerns me when I see some members trying to boycott certain things: like movies, advertisiments in BYU magazines, etc. EVEN if these movies are not portraiting the Church in their best 'light', it doesn't mean we have the right to boycott them, doesn't go against one of our Articles of Faith?. Then I see why some non-members think that LDS members have this 'holy than thou' attitude because they are quick to try to remove the negativity towards the Church but not willing to make the necessary changes within their own lives.
I would say that we have the "right" to boycott anything we want. Personally, I generally boycott anything French or Canadian, but I am not obsessive about it.
People sending emails around to urge a boycott of Blockbuster just because it carries this particular movie is exactly like fundamentalist evangelical christians boycotting Disney movies like Mulan because Disney allows gay couples to share benefits. All it really does is show how foolish and intolerant those urging the boycott are.
We first saw the movie The RM on a DVD we rented from Blockbuster. We were able to purchase a copy of it, used, from there. I am sure that there are evangelical groups that are boycotting Blockbuster because it carries The Book of Mormon Movie. I don't plan on seeing that movie, any more than I expect to see this one.
If you don't like the premise of a movie, don't watch it. (Speaking in the general 'you' form, not at anyone in particular) We each can, and should, boycott those things that are wrong. This would include such things as X-rated movies, crack houses, etc.
Anyway, just a little bit of rambling going on here. I haven't seen this movie, and don't expect to. Just plain not interested in it.
Nighthawk, I understand what you're saying and I agree with you about certain things like X rated movies and so on that are plain wrong but what about those movies that just do not portrait the Church in a good light? Is it okay to boycott them? I don't think so, as you well mentioned, if you don't like the movie do not watch it, now I'm not defending those movies at all because I personally get mad everytime I heard things like that but I am not going to boycott them for that reason.
