Father & Mother Countries

Fatherlands and other countries set further back in history tend to use descriptive language to show their superiority to other 'younger' nations. Just the fact that one would say 'fatherland' already describes something of seniority. The British have known to refer to such places as the USA, Caribbean and other areas as 'The Colonies'. What are some of the more interesting things you have heard when it comes to language from the 'older' nations?

A term that is in close relation to "fatherland" is the term "homeland". Specifically, in "Homeland Security", which arose as a result of 9/11. According to webster.com, the two terms are actually synonymous. I never thought about it until now, but I suppose using that term could incite feelings of nationalism and general superiority to some.
