Dan Rather, Should He Step Down?

Dan Rather to leave anchor desk in March

From CNN:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Longtime anchor Dan Rather will leave the "CBS Evening News" on March 9, the network said Tuesday, just months after Rather's use of questionable documents in a report critical of President Bush's National Guard service.

Rather, 73, said he will continue to work full time as a correspondent for the network's two "60 Minutes" programs as well as other assignments.

"I have always been and remain a 'hard news' investigative reporter at heart," Rather said in a statement. "I now look forward to pouring my heart into that kind of reporting full time."

CBS spokesman Gil Schwartz said that Rather's decision to leave "was independent of the findings of the panel looking into the '60 Minutes II' report on President Bush's National Guard service."

Down Step Should Rather Dan

Dan Rather served his time at CBS well, and with the whole Bush National Guard scandal, he was never going to be able to live it down. I wouldnt be surprised if he was pressured into retiring. At 73, he will always have a legacy as a journalist, whether it be positive or negative.

Dan Rather, Should He Step Down? History & Civil Business Politics

Yes, and is sad that after such long career he would leave in the way he is doing. It is not good for his image at all, all the years of hard work will not be remembered as why he is stepping down. Sad. But those who are in the 'game' know how it is. And he knows it more than anybody else. undecided.gif

Down Step Should Rather Dan

Dan Rather has had a checkered history through his career. The Bush National Guard thing was not his first time of appearing to "make" the news as opposed to reporting it. However, much like a regular company, Dan Rather is a key player at CBS. When a key player in regular organization has a issue like this, they move them to a different position. Dan really should be moved from a Journalist position to that of a Commentator. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Rielly and Hannity are all commentators and are enjoying fruitful careers. This really seems more along the lines of where Dan's interest lie. I know it is a thin line, but he really does have a lot of trouble not being biased.

My thoughts,

Vincenzo

Down Step Should Rather Dan

I agree with all of your posts. There is no way that he is leaving without having been asked or pressured into leaving. Like you, Malexander, I always thought he was a good reporter, honest and searching for the truth, and he definitely left his mark. I don't think anyone will be forgetting about him. I was so disappointed when I saw the show where he accused President Bush of not fulfilling his duty. I felt just watching it that Dan was not being truthful. He almost seemed too excited, to me, about what he was reporting and definitely wanted to convince people. I knew he didn't like Bush and wanted Kerry to win, but his record has been so good I couldn't believe he lied. I don't know that I believe he thought the reports were true. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes with the elite reporters, like Dan Rather, and politics. Lot's of pressure I think. I suppose that we will never know for sure unless an accurate source has the info and chooses to share that with the public. I am happy that he is stepping down only because I don't feel that he has a good enough excuse for what happened.

Dan Rather Should Step Down

Dan takes off his sheet to join the set of the Chris Matthews show!

international QUOTE
"Listen he's a nice person, he's very articulate" this is what's been used against him, "but he couldn't sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

Now if Dan were say a Republican, Tea Partier or Libritarian, what would the media say about his choice of words?

In September of 1986, Rather spent several days signing off his newscast with the word "Courage." He was ridiculed for it at the time, but brought the word back at the end of his final broadcast in 2005. Ref. Source 4
