Chromophobia is the Fear of Color. You might laugh at the idea that someone could be afraid of a color, but could you live in a house painted in all black?
I hadnt heard of chromophobia before. Does this mean that the person can only be around black and white color? That would be a very depressing way to live but I guess it would be better than getting anxious because of colors.
It probably doesn't have to do with fear of all colors, but rather a sensitivity to an odd combination of colors(for example, a room full of only the brightest yellow, blue and red ), or a complete dominance of one color.
Well, we need to understand that these kind of phobias are not something that people have to live all through their lives. Usually something traumatic have taken place or a deep fear and they throw that fear to something that we think is ridiculous such as color, balloons, clowns or buttons. There are places where this people can go and be treated, usually they need only ONE or TWO sessions before getting rid of it and how the sessions are?, simply they confront the person with the fear until the person leaves the office free of that particular problem.
Chromophobia -
1. Resistance to stains. Used of certain cells and histologic structures.
2. An abnormal fear of colors or a color.
Resistance to stains? Thats rather odd, I have never heard of that. But I have found out that most people with chromophobia are afraid of one color, not all of them. I myself have never actually met someone with this phobia but it seems like it would have to be a horrible phobia to have! And then I have to ask how one develops this type of phobia?
I haven't got a phobia of a color, but I have got a deep rooted dislike of the color lime green. In small amounts it's fine, but when we moved into our last house, the previous people had painted every wall in the kitchen lime green, even the doors were painted the same.
I felt sick every time I went into the kitchen and had to face all this lime green!
It had to be the first thing that was immediately changed was the color in there!
Now, I know this sounds weird, but I can pin point exactly why I don't like this color, and rationalize it.
The reason being, that thoughts and smells can bring back memories of a byegone time, whether it be a good memory or not.
Unfortunately, all that the lime green color brought back to me, was when I was a child, I spent week upon week, ill in hospital, even right through Christmas one year, and the medication that they had to give me was lime green, and reacted badly with me and made me sick.
It was a vicious circle, as there was only one medication for my illness available at the time, but I knew every time I took it that in the short term, that too was going to make me vomit.-- But at least this is minor compared to other people who are still suffering.
In my opinion, this is probably what is going on with other people who have a far worse problem coping with a certain color than I ever had, it probably represents something else within their memory, that is bringing back a memory of something horrible within their past.
