What do you do if upon returning home you see the door to your house open even though you know you locked it? A couple of times I found myself going through the house with a knife or other object in SWAT manner to see if anyone was there. I guess normally in other countries you would call the police? Not here, you would be wasting your time. However, what would you do? Stand outside and wait or go in and check?

I've had this happen before to me, and I was a little bit freaked myself. Our front door needs to be pulled in all the way to be properly shut and sometimes my daughter will think she closed it all the way and didn't. Then a strong wind comes by and blows it right open. I've woken up in the middle of the night and found the door wide open; that was even scarier because it was dark. I have a long stick that I keep in the front closet and I was walking around the house with this stick poised for combat. It was a very funny sight indeed. I hope I never have to get into that situation where I need to defend my house and my family, but I'm ready!

If I came home and the door was open I would check the house, but I wouldn't do it alone. If somebody was dropping me off, then I'd have them come with me. I have the weirdest collection of objects in my car, and I'm sure something could be used as a weapon, even if it's just my tire iron. If I had driven home and was alone, I'd grab a neighbor. I just don't feel that it would be the safe thing to do to walk inside alone.
I've been at home alone at night and have heard sounds that are uncommon that sounded like somebody was trying to get in. Everytime this has happened I have immediately gotten on the phone with somebody. My first inclination is not to call the police because it could just as easily be a tree branch or something. Where I live we have tons of trees, and sometimes those limbs sound like somebody trying to get into the house.
