President Obama accepted the request to retire from Gen. John Allen today. Allen had stepped down from leading the U.S. Mission in Afghanistan and was considered for a commanding role in Europe, but that nomination had been put on hold, pending an investigation into allegations of improper emails with a Tampa socialite. He was completely exonerated last month by a months-long Defense Department inspector general investigation that pored through his correspondence. Ref. USAToday
