Yep...he used the word only once in class...apologised but was fired anyway....but guess what? his students love him and was chosen professor of the year 2003-2004...
From Salt Lake Tribune:
CEDAR CITY - Stephen Roberds, the popular and controversial Southern Utah University political-science professor who recently came under fire for letting loose with the f-word, was fired Wednesday.
"We have gone through policies and procedures, and based on a variety of things, the decision was made that a contract for the 2005-06 academic year not be granted to Professor Roberds," said Dean Decker, dean of SUU's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Decker sent Roberds a letter saying his contract with the southwest Utah school would not be renewed....

Well, this is the kind of action I was speaking of in the thread about the controversial play click here to read
He may be a good professor, but does that mean we should let him use language that is offensive? If strong action isn't taken when people do things that are unacceptable, they will continue to do them. We can't say, "well, I find such language offensive, why does everyone use it" and not take action when it is used.
I remember when I was working in the last school (it was a private school) I asked one of my students to show me her notebook to see what they have learnt in Spanish with the last teacher. I could not believe my eyes when I saw a whole list of the most rude words you can ever imagine! yes...including the F-word!. I asked several other children to show me their notebooks and they had the same thing which it means the last teacher took the time and prepared a lesson about bad words! I was shocked and immediatly reported to the Principal...can you imagine if I did not do that, the parents or the Principal may have thought it was me!.
To fire a teacher for letting one word slip once that he hears from his students several times daily is sickening. Obviously, this professor had other, unpunishable differences with his administrators, and they were waiting with baited breath for this guy to slip. I had a teacher in high school who was unpopular with the administration, but who was the best choir director we ever had. His contract was not renewed, just like this professor, for some small, common teaching blunder. I was livid. Then here at college I have had several professors who curse almost every class, and nobody bats an eye. This is why I want to teach - it requires so much passion and intestinal fortitude to stick with it!
Well, the administrators of the college have gone on the record saying that he was not fired for the swearing incident. In fact, he wasn't given tenure because he didn't fit in to what they want. In my opinion, that is how it should be. If I do not fit the mold my employers are looking for to shape the work environment for which they are responsible, I won't stay employed. Why should teachers be any different?
My understanding in this case (limited to the article quoted) is that he was being considered for tenure, there had been other issues, this one kind of just topped them all off and made the administration rethink giving him tenure.
If we want society to change...become less vulgar, for example, it will take acts such as this to accomplish that change. It needs to be done, one step at a time.

Based on what I read, the students said the professor had a very hard time adjusting to such a conservative place...so it seems to me like Tena mentioned that maybe there were some more problems that we know of...I'm not saying the guy is wrong, what I'm saying is that if he does not fit with school regulations or do not fit the profile the school is looking for, then he needs to get another job. Teachers are also representatives of the school.
I can not say i agree with them firing the teacher for one slip because it could happen anywhere for example our police force chases people all the time they intentinally curse but we don't fire them for it how are they any diffrent thats what i would really like to know!!!
