Because of cases like this that are getting more and more frequent (even in our Church) I can't say I fully trust anyone....

international QUOTE
Ervil LeBaron grimaced as he looked down at the body of his pregnant daughter in the trunk of his car. Rebecca's neck was chafed raw from the rope her killers had used to strangle her, and a stream of blood had dripped from her nose onto the mat under her head. He slammed the trunk shut.
The green-and-white Ford LTD was new, and it was the spiffiest car Ervil had ever owned. Not only had his daughter's blood soiled his precious car, it was also an indication of sloppy work by the murderers -- whom he'd contracted.

Ervil LeBaron had his daughter killed because God told him to do it. God had told the fundamentalist Mormon to do a lot of peculiar things over the years, and Ervil always obeyed without question.

When the Almighty commanded him to "Be fruitful and multiply," Ervil took 13 wives and sired over 50 children. Ref. Source

When God told Ervil to kill, he did that too...

It seems that some of the most heinious crimes have a mormon connection. Our critics like to point this out to show what the real result of mormonism is. However, they are isolated incidents for the most part. But also if you think of the Book of Mormon and how those who were nephites who fell away and fought against God became more hardened than the lamanites. Those who sin against the greater light fall deeper into the clutches of Satan than someone without ever having the Gospel.

I don't think it's so much that members of the Church are connected to a disproportionate number of heinous crimes, it's more that when members are involved, they are publicly billed as MORMONS. You never see headlines that say CATHOLIC ASSAULTS CHILD or JEHOVAH'S WITNESS KILLS SISTER. But when it's a member of the Church, those who report are sure to make it clear.

If you take the Church as a whole, over 12 million members, you will probably find a significantly lower rate of violent crime generally. Of course there are members who choose not to control themselves, but their evil is ignorable compared to the good accomplished in the Church generally, and their actions are absolutely contrary to the doctrine and common practice of the Church.

True, but what concerns me the most is that the few cases that we have between our members are cases of EXTREME violence and abuse.

I agree that the cases we have been discussing on this forum are extreme in nature. However, does any group of people have fewer of these types of crime than the Latter-Day Saints? Murders and sexual assaults are terrible, but we do not see a widespread pattern of them in the Church. We hear about a handful of cases each year, compared with the outright scandals so prevalent in the news involving some other denominations. The Church has no tolerance for this behavior - they want to rehabilitate the sinner, but the victim is first priority in these cases.

However, I would also say that milder forms of abuse, especially domestic violence, are a widespread problem in the Church, even though we have lower rates than other groups. If the Prophet had to speak to the Priesthood brethren with such plainness and sharpness in this last conference, there are obviously problems in that realm that are so common that the whole Church needed correction on those points. President Hinckley especially talked about the evils of pornography, which is almost always one major factor in cases of sexual misconduct. Sadly, that counsel was focused as much toward Church leaders as it was toward 14-year old boys with dirty magazines. It is a powerful tool, and any person can fall victim in certain circumstances.

So my point is not to exonerate those who do terrible things and are Church members. My point is that the Church has fewer incidents in all areas of crime, including crimes of extreme violence, and that the Church handles these situations in the most ethical way possible; however, violence is more prevalent than some of us are willing to acknowledge.
