I was not sure where to post this really, but I guess it can be considered an 'at home' issue. I came home today to smell something strange in the kitchen. It smelt like if something had died, but it was not a particularly strong odor and you only got a whiff of it when you stood in a certain place -- near the refrigerator. Now I moved the fridge, checked all around it, brought the ladder to check above it, but I saw and smelt nothing further. So I got down and as sure as day the smell was back, so I checked and checked, but still nothing. I then decided to check the stove out which was on the other side of the kitchen. I pulled the stove out and there it was... a dead mouse. Well, besides the description of the horrid smell I started this thread about something I have always wondered...
How can something dead in one area smell in one place that is not near to it and yet areas near to it did not smell? A mystery? Yes, the windows were close and the air still.
I cant explain this JB, but your anecdote reminds me of one of my own. We have a large dog, a 90lb retriever, and his cage can only fit in the corner of the kitchen. Needless to say the top of his cage has become a place for storing some extra things in the kitchen because of how high it is.
Anyway, my wife had recently gotten some corn from her mom and it was in a plastic bag, and I guess the day she got it, placed it on the cage and forgot about it. Well, a few weeks later this smell starts originating from the kitchen. However, you could only smell it when coming up from the basement into the kitchen, and of course, we all thought it was either the garbage pail in that corner, or something behind the refrigerator, keeping in mind that the cage is in the opposite corner of the kitchen. Well after moving the fridge, cleaning the garbage, replacing the garbage can, the smell persisted, until we eventually discovered the corn which by now was very mouldy and smelly. What is even more peculiar is that there is a telephone right by the cage, and we use that phone quite a bit, but not once has any smell emanated while by that phone! It is indeed a mystery! Probably we should move this discussion to the Mystery board
Good, I am glad I am not the only one that has experienced this. There must be some kind of scientific explanation for that. Possibly the way air carries or stays in certain parts of a room.
Good idea...

Interesting. Sometimes I have this weird thing where I smell something that smells like dead fish in the kitchen (notable, because we don't have fish, living or dead). It always seems to be centered around the sink, but it only seems to happen every so often, like once a year. Weird, huh? O_o
Edit: I know what may account for smell location, though. "Path of least resistance." If the smell is old, it'll most likely be cold, and cold stuff sinks and/or stays near the ground. Adversely, heat rises. So, either you'd have to be in the "zone" of the smell, or in the path of it. Plus, there's no doubt smells that can cancel other smells out.

This reminds me of a murder case in Argentina some weeks ago. This child was missing and his parents report it to the police. They searched for the child everywhere and they could not find him. Some days later his body was found behind his own house inside of a big barrel. The police of course arrested his parents who swear they have nothing to do with this child's death. Forensic evidence shows no signs of violence and it says the child died of asphyxia. The police arrested their parents because they cannot believe they never smell the body who was right behind their house. I do believe sometimes it is possible not to smell something or it smells in the wrong place as point out before.
Yikes, that's so sad. And...kind of gross. We had a situation like that in the dorm, but we never found out what the problem was. The room across the hall had this raunchy smell of dead fish, but it was just right by the bathroom door. We checked all over the place, and couldn't find anything that was causing the smell.
This reminds me of a smell I had in my kitchen. It seemed to be coming from near the sink, so I assumed it was the garbage disposal. I kept pouring stuff in to try to get rid of the smell. It just didn't seem to work. I wonder if it was coming from someplace else. Eventually the smell went away. Maybe it, too, was a dead mouse. After a while, a dead mouse will decompose enough to stop smelling. Well, at least it doesn't stink now. If it happens again, I will check on the other side of the kitchen for the source.
