Tithing Settlement
This thread is different from other threads that discuss tithing. We are not trying to evaluate Gross or Net, nor wether you pay tithes or not, but the fact of the matter is... Do you attend Tithing Settlement?
What is it? Each year's end you meet with the Bishop or Branch President and give an account of wether you are full, partial or non tithed payer. Many who do not work feel that they do not need to attend, but this is a myth. It is a good time for you to evaluate your perspective of tithing as well as to know wether all your donations (in each column - FO, Missionary, etc.) is accurate.
My appointment is next Sunday afternoon for this year. And that's convenient because I will have received my Christmas gifts, my last paycheck for the year and probably my bonus, also, so I can have an accurate accounting
I don't always attend tithing settlement. I don't find the times available convenient and I don't see the point in asking the Bishop to see me another time. I pay a full tithe. The Lord knows it is a full tithe. I pay my tithing each time I receive any income so there is no settlement to be made other than to say yes that is a full tithe. I don't take the numbers the bishop has and then go back and figure out what I collected and confirm it is a full tithe. I know it is because I pay it every time I receive a payment.
Also, I know the Bishop uses this meeting as a catch up with the members time and to put forth whatever his pet project for the ward is at the moment. I am relatively sure he will ask me about my ex. I don't feel like discussing it any more with him. The last time we met, probably about a year ago, he indicated he was going to initiate disciplinary action. He didn't. That is fine, but if nothing is going to be done, I don't want to discuss it further, just let me get on with things. I think it woudl be rude of me to say that to him though, so I am avoiding the meeting.
So, this has gotten a little off topic, but I just felt a need to explain why I don't always attend tithing settlement.

I attend tithing settlement each year. This year, it seems even more important because I just got called as executive secretary and assistant ward clerk in my student ward, so I am fast seeing the importance of doing it accurately and completely for the records of the Church. The scriptures say we will be judged out of the books that are written. That includes Church records. If we figure the Lord already knows what we made and what we paid, we are correct. But at the Judgement, he may well ask us why we didn't declare our status to his servants, as he has prescribed. I do not look down upon any who decide not to attend tithing settlement, but I do wonder whether our excuses will matter much in the end. I have plenty to fix in my life, but I'm grateful that tithing and tithing settlement are not on the list.
I always attend, but I do not always enjoy how it is handled. Being in a relatively 'young' member land it seems that most leaders do not know how to make it a spiritual affair rather than a mechanical one, nevertheless, coming out knowing you are square with the Lord is a fantastic feeling.
Offtopic but, Tena, maybe you can just be direct with your Bishop and say something like, "If you don't mind I would rather not discuss him at the moment as I want to focus on tithing settlement." All he can do is respect your wishes unless he has another agenda. |

Offtopic but, I have considered exactly what you suggest JB. I believe that is how I will handle things, if it comes up. |
