I just watched this for a second time, this time with my son. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. I then proceeded online to look for reviews and was amazed at the negativity given towards it with the word 'choppy' being used quite frequently.
Here are some points that should be noted:
1. When the duck's boat get's hit and he flys away, that is infact the AFLAC duck (from the commercial).
2. In the scene where Count Olaf starts walking from the balcony to the stairs, you can see his right hand when he is saying "lovely home" with no writing. Later when he looks at his hand to remember Violet's name, his hand has writing on it.
3. Deliberate "mistake": In the shot where the camera zooms in on the car, after they realise they are standing on a train track, it is obvious that the car would be hit by the train even if they managed to change tracks. The car's hood is parked right above the other track.

Here is an unofficial site that contains a lot of information:

I just saw this for the third time. Each time I watch it I learn about the perseverance of the children despite their extreme times - I like that.
Some other observations:
* Notice that you do not see other cars or people walking on the streets
* The use of both modern with old gadgetry
* It was obviously the count that started the fires using his eye in some cases and other methods in others
