Saw it last night. It was very good… But it was also very long. Alexander was… A very interesting person… I been meaning to do some research on his "Preference" since he seemed very intimate with his same sex during the movie. Danielle Darrieux played Alexander's mother beautifully.... I'll leave the rest for you to see for yourselves. For those who have seen it, your opinion?

Great Alexander

Is the movie about Alexander, or Alexander's sexuality? I ask because lately, all I hear mentioned if the bisexuality. Does it cover his life, or does it concentrate on a specific period of time of his life?

I thought Angelina Jolie played Olympias.

Anyway, I thought the movie was okay. I would watch it if it was shown on tv and I'd buy the dvd if it was on sale. It's true that the movie was more about Alexander's sex life than anything else, but then again, so are most of the movies in theaters nowadays.

I think I was more impressed with the fact that research was done before the movie was made- and it shows! Yes, Alexander was not exactly heterosexual. He and Hephaistian were close even before Alexander set out on conquering the known world. The two of them went so far as to compare themselves to Achilles and Patroclus. Also, certain battle tactics were shown, such as the mousetrap maneuver. Darius's chariots were equipped with blades on the wheels to cut down infantryment, but the mousetrap maneuver rendered the charriots useless; imagine my nerdly surprise to see that on the big screen! Lastly, I did like that other relatively hush-hush details were pointed out- such as Alexander's near Oedipal complex, the fact that Olympias wasn't really Macedonian, and the like.

However, as with all Hollywood creations, there were some problems. For one, it seems that the entire Macedonian army was made up of Scots and Irish men. Secondly, Colin Farrell played a rather quiet, sober Alexander; in fact, it was rather well known that Alexander was an alcoholic (as per Macedonian culture) and borderline insane. And I understand that the movie is long as it is, but isn't it funny that the first few years of Alexander's campaign don't even make it to the screen? We, the viewers, are taken straight from boyhood to the battle of Gaugamela, as if events such as Alexander's visit to the Oracle at Delphi and the siege of Tyre never happened!

Like I said, the movie was okay, but not great. I'd recommend going to a matinee showing instead of paying full price. Oh, and make sure you don't sit next to Mr. and Ms. Popculture during the movie; through the whole dang movie, they can and will argue about whether or not Alexander was gay, then argue about whether or not this means that Colin Farrell is gay, and then snicker like two year olds at every sexual reference. Just a warning.

I have experienced this before. Some people seem to forget their manners when they leave the house. My usual experience is to be next to "The Expert." You know, the person who cannot wait to share any and all knowledge related to the movie, characters and actors. When I went to see The Empire Strikes Back during its original release, I made the mistake of seeing it with someone who had already seen it. He spent the entire movie telling me what was coming up next.

I just saw the movie and it was great! I do not find that it focused on his sexuality as much as everyone is portraying it did. In fact, for a three hour film the time set to deal with is personal issues was about right. The battle scenes were great and the desires of his mother well portrayed by Nighthawk's favorite actress wink.gif

Hey Osiris, you're quoting me but I did not say that! smile.gif

I saw the movie yesterday and I thought it was awesome. I really liked it a lot, 3 hours is long...I know! but if knew beforehand Alexander's life you would find it fascinating!. Colin Farrel did an amazing job and Angelina Jolie too.

To Osiris - Yes, the movie does cover his life from childhood to adulthood. I was actually very impressed with the coverage and was surprised to learn the things I did throughout the movie.

To Rache - I thought so to, and I still think she does, but for some reason, when I was reading about it, it said otherwise. Perhaps it was a mistake on my part?
And thank you, because as we speak I am snickering over the last few lines about Mr. and Mrs. Popculture, since, indeed, I sat beside them during my expedition to the movies. Also, you brought up some very good points and some that I hadn't thought of myself. Thanks, again!

LDS and Trinidad - ^_^ I agree as well. All time issues set aside, it was a stirring piece and all mistakes withstanding, very intriguing.

I cannot understand how some people did not enjoy this movie, I'm just guessing it is because they do not know much about history?. I don't know. I love the movie.

From CNN.com

Saving 'Alexander'

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Alexander the Great conquered a nice chunk of the world before he died young. The makers of "Alexander," the three-hour Oliver Stone saga about the Greek warrior's life, are banking on a similar conquest before it's too late.

The film has, by most accounts, flopped in North America. With a worse-than-expected $33 million in ticket sales in its first three weeks out, industry analysts say "Alexander" is all but done in domestic theaters. That's more than a flesh wound for Warner Bros. and other backers, which spent nearly $200 million to make and market "Alexander," according to estimates from BoxOfficeMojo.com.

But the film's investors may win the battle yet. Thanks to foreign movie buffs and DVD collectors, "Alexander" might just eke out a profit....
