Stanford University Plans to Clone Human Embryos

San Francisco, CA -- Stanford University announced Tuesday its intention to clone human embryos, becoming the first U.S. university to publicly embrace the life-destructive research.

The intent of the project is to produce embryonic stem cells for medical research.

The stem cell work will be part of the new Institute for Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine, launched with a $12 million anonymous donation to the school. Much of the institute's research will be geared to treating cancer. Any stem cells created will be shared with outside researchers, many of whom complain of inadequate access to currently available stem cell lines.

Dr. Irving Weissman, an outspoken stem cell research proponent, was named institute director.

Weissman, serving as chairman of a National Academy of Sciences panel, testified before the U.S. Senate earlier this year in favor of cloning human embryos as a supply source for stem cells.

Scientists believe embryonic stem cells, which are created in the first days of pregnancy and develop into all the cells that comprise a human body, can be used to treat many illnesses. However, preliminary research reveals them to be ineffective. Adult stem cells taken from more ethical sources appear to be more useful in treating a myriad of diseases.

Last year, President Bush prohibited any federal funding of new embryonic stem cell research -- such as what will be conducted at Stanford.

"Our avowed goal is to advance science," Weissman said. "For any group to stay out of the action and wait for someone else to do it because of political reasons is wrong."

Weissman said he intends to recruit the top cloning researchers to Stanford and wants "to put them on notice that we are after them."

Cult Leader Admits Human Cloning Claim May be a Hoax

Washington, DC -- The founder of a UFO cult that claims it has cloned the
first human baby admits the claim may be a hoax.

French scientist and member of the Raelian sect Brigitte Boisselier
declared on Dec. 26, "I have created life," in announcing the birth of a
baby girl she claimed was a clone of a 31-year-old American woman.

Bosselier, the chief scientist for the millennial sect and managing
director of Clonaid, a Las Vegas, Nevada-based company, refused to say
where the human embryo allegedly was cloned or implanted into the mother,
or even where the baby, named Eve, was born.

No scientific proof of Bosselier's claim has been provided.

Bosselier initially promised an "independent inspector" would take DNA
evidence from baby and mother to verify her claim, but then reneged after
Miami attorney Bernard Siegel filed a petition for the state to take
custody of the baby. Bosselier said the unidentified parents had decided
against the DNA testing.

A hearing on Siegel's motion was slated for yesterday. Clonaid's vice
president Thomas Kaenzig has been ordered to testify.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating Clonaid's claim. Though
the U.S. has no specific law against human cloning, the FDA, which
regulates human experiments, has contended since 1998 that its regulations
forbid human cloning without prior agency
permission.

Clonaid was founded in the Bahamas in 1997 by Claude Vorilhon, a former
race-car driver and journalist who founded the Raelians.

"If it's real, [Bosselier] deserves the Nobel prize because she is making
history and it's the most fantastic scientific advance in the history of
humanity," Vorilhon told 300 followers gathered at the cult's Canadian base
in Quebec Sunday.

As the ZENIT news agency reported, this was the first public admission by
Vorilhon undercutting the credibility of the cloning claim.

"If it's not true, she's also making history with one of the biggest hoaxes
in history," Vorilhon said, "so in both ways it's wonderful. Because,
thanks to what she is doing now, the whole world knows about the Raelian
movement. I am very happy with that."

The cloning claim could have been a ploy for media attention for the
religious sect.

"A media analyst said the Raelian movement got about $500 million worth of
media coverage across the world and I think it is true, and it is not
finished," the Associated Press quotes him as telling his followers. "This
event saved me 20 years of work."

Raelians believe the first humans were cloned by aliens who visited the
Earth in flying saucers 25,000 years ago. They believe these aliens, or
Elohim - a Hebrew word referring to God - will return to Jerusalem when
there is world peace and an embassy has been built for them.

Vorilhon renamed himself Rael after supposedly being visited in 1973 by a
member of the Elohim. He described his visitor as being about 3-feet tall
with long black hair, almond-shaped eyes, olive skin and exuding "harmony
and humor."

He says he discovered through this meeting that his father was an alien,
and claims he was taken in the flying saucer to meet Jesus, Buddha and
Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons. Rael, who lives in Quebec, now
describes himself as a prophet and claims that cloning will enable humanity
to attain eternal life.

Five followers of Raelianism were reportedly implanted with cloned embryos
earlier last year as the UFO cult raced with maverick Italian gynecologist
Severino Antinori to be the first to deliver a cloned human baby.

Antinori announced in November that three women had been impregnated with
cloned embryos. The first birth is said to be due this month.

Cloning Human

I see lots of current problems with cloning but I also see wonderful opportunities for people as techniques are refined and perfected.  It's a two-edged sword that if used irresponsibly could be nightmarish but if used responsibly by enlightened individuals would benefit us.
I wonder however if those of us born from the gigantic human gene pool randomly (considered 'normal' in today's world) will discriminate against those souls inhabiting 'cloned' bodies.
The cloning processes should be 'controlled' if possible but certainly not 'banned'.  I see genetic engineeering as a huge field of endeavor that on balance will help mankind perfect itself ridding itself of crippling diseases and more. There will be problems, yes, big ones, monstrous ones but hopefully nothing humans can't fix over time.

That's a very good point Nephiproject.  Yes I  think that people will discriminated them, oh for sure they will, now I think it's something so terrible what they're doing, personally I don't care if it's for the benefit of the people or not because they're doing something bad to do something good in the future? it doesn't make any sense!

Human Cloning?

I think that what's most important is that people come to grips with the fact that cloning techniques are out there and it has been done and more will be done in the future, whether they do it legally or illegally.  Now,the ethical implications need to be discussed - not banning it or allowing it.  Will it be a weapon or will it be used responsibly and what can people and countries do to prevent the kind of 'accidents' that will almost certainly happen.

Oh it will be a weapon definetly, although I'm sure it wil be use for some good purposes, but some crazy and unscrupulous scientists will try to use it for evil. I don't think nothing can be done to stop the 'accidents' that you refer to. Once the clonation start, nothing will be able to stop it. Like you mentioned before, legally or illegaly they will do it....

I don't I agree with it! It's a big crazy idea and it is against Heavenly Father's plan for us.
